Does someone have suggestions for literature I could send my dear youngest son who does not practice his faith, that would be meaningful for him and possibly motivating enough for him to revisit it? Brought up in our Catholic home, he went to church with the family through his school years (public schools and CCD classes), but since being on his own for the last 20 years, he has not practiced his faith at all. Despite my strict observance of all things and faithful mass attendance all his formative years…

Thank you.

Will he read it if you send it to him? St. Faustina’s diary is a great, easy to read book. It is pretty big, though.

My guess is that he will see your “gift” as a disapproval of him and it may have the opposite effect . Your best option as a parent (unless you know he would appreciate a book on his faith) is to pray pray pray…anything else can seem like meddling/nagging to an adult child.

Any suggestions I’d be able to give you would really depend most on your son’s reasons for leaving the faith behind. Do you have any idea why he is not practicing? Have you asked? Does he show any hostility to the faith? Have you invited him to attend mass with you, and if so, what sort of a response was your invitation met with?

I don’t doubt there is a saint in heaven who has left a legacy that could bring your son home to the church.

And as Malia said, pray fervently for your son’s return.

I’d suggest you read Patrick Madrid’s “Search and Rescue” - it will give you a place to start on reaching out to your son.

If you feel he is open to a book, Matthew Kelly’s “Rediscovering Catholicism” is very good.

In this case, I’ve already chatted with him about his “departure” from the faith he was reared in and he agreed he would read what I would send him. I appreciate your comment and it could well apply with a different son…but thankfully he does not see me coming from disapproval.

And my thanks to all who have answered here: the comments and tips are appreciated: I do believe I have to do some research into these suggestions next.

Ahhh, that’s helpful to know! I am sure you will get more recommendations… I can start by suggesting Catholicism for Dummies…it’s a great, to the point, easy to understand reference and introduction/re-introduction to the faith. I actually just bought one for myself.;)**

There are several more I found helpful on my journey into the Faith…I need to go pick my brain, be back when i remember🙂
