Suggested reading for me? Next year I am starting RCIA

Hello,

Next year when I’m 20 I will be starting RCIA. I need some guidance on my decision to become Catholic. My thoughts on becoming one seem rather disorganized but the inspiration is definitely real.

Reading books by Richard Rohr led me to an interest in becoming a Christian, and watching or reading people like Bishop Robert Barron and Thomas Aquinas have made me interested in becoming Catholic.

What do you guys suggest I read? I have a lot of books checked out from the library on Catholicism, including people like Scott Hanh and Peter Kreeft.

I enjoyed a book called Jesus and the Jewish roots of the Eucharist.

Aquinas? Timeless. Bishop Robert Barron and Drs. Hahn and Kreeft? Excellent choices.

I would suggest, “Why do Catholics do that?” Quick read and super informative!
 
I would recommend The Mass by Cardinal Wuerl and Mike Aquilina. Since the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith, and the Mass is focused on the Eucharist, this book is a great (and easily understandable) read.

For that matter, I would recommend any books by Cardinal Wuerl.
 
You can’t go wrong with “The Official Catechism of the Catholic Church”. Also, “The Lamb’s Supper”, by Scott Hanh is a good explanation of the Mass.
 
Hi David,
Stephen Walford’s new book “Communion of Saints:The Unity of Divine Love in the Mystical Body of Christ” (endorsed by Scott Hahn) explains in detail the understanding of the entire Church on earth in Purgatory and Heaven. It takes the Bible and theology together to show how and why the Church came into existance and what it truly means to be a Catholic.

Britannica’s article on “The History of Christianity” was an eye-popper for me which I read prior to RCIA.

Perhaps it will do you as much good as it did me.

Also, Thomas Merton’s “The Seven Storey Mountain” and Dorothy Day’s “The Long Lonliness” my priest recommended – both eye and soul opening.

This is the faith, a very good catechism
My daily bread, wonderful daily meditations for understanding and growing in virtue.
Preface to religion by Fulton j. Sheen, I think this is a wonderful book for those beginning in the faith, though also good for anyone 🙂 actually anything by him is great, you can also look up his tv show and watch that for great lessons on our faith.

Just a few for starters, I’ll keep you in my prayers 🙂 take care.
 
Sounds like you have received many good suggestions. I have also seen recommended on other threads a book called Catholicism for Dummies (no offense
intended!) which is supposed to be a good overall introduction to the Catholic faith.
I have the book, but I converted over 8 years ago, so I haven’t read it yet. I just came across it a year ago in a pile of free books.
 
Along with the other excellent suggestions above, I highly recommend “Theology for Beginners” by Frank Sheed.
 
To Know Christ Jesus by Frank Sheed is one of the best books I have ever read.
 
I echo Catholicism for Dummies. Also a Catholic bible with a good commentary or a Catholic bible study program, like Scott Hahn’s or Jeff Cavins.

New Catholic Generation - Steubies! (University of Steubenville) Kinda nerdy, kinda crazy, all Catholic.

While you may not think you’re getting a lot of theology, you are immersing yourself in the ‘Catholic World’. Kinda like learning to speak french - it’s much easier to learn french in France! 👍

Funny you say that- today I checked out “Idiot’s Guide to Catholicism”… “Idiot”, “dummie”, both words we’ve all felt like calling ourselves! 🙂

Thanks everyone for the support and suggestions- I read all of your posts and decided to find a copy of Sheen’s “Preface to Religion”.
