I want to expand the faith related reading materials of my family. In addition to the bible of course (Douay Rheims) and the MY PRAYER BOOK by Rev. F. X. Lasance that I recently purchased. What other books would be a good place to start not only for my own reading but for family library.

There seems to be so many books on faith out there and alot of them don’t state if they are catholic books or not. The ones that I have found that are catholic I am not really familiar with the author and I want to ensure the books I purchase are not going to lead us in the wrong direction.

Shannon-

can you give us some more detail about your family (are you looking for books for teens or children, or primarily for adults?) and your experience (are you a new convert, a cradle Catholic who was not t aught the faith, or someone with a lot of knowledge of the faith already who wants to deepen her devotion?) That will help us narrow down our suggestions!

Shannon, I would go to Ignatius Press, for starters: ignatius.com/

Also, if you think your family is interested in listening to some very good Catholic talks (.mp3 files) you can go to my website and download as many as you like for free. You can play them on your PC onr MP3 player or iPod, etc. There are talks on a very wide variety of topics.

I also recently put a page of .pdf files for reading, if you’re interested.

Search the Catechism of the Catholic Church here scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

Outside of Sacred Scripture i was most influenced by “Confessions” of St. Augustine scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

My family consists myself who was born to catholic parents but not actively raised in the faith and my husband who was born to a catholic home and attended catholic school as a child but was never baptized as his parents wanted to leave that up to him??? (never really got that)… and of course my 6 year-old daughter who has not yet been baptized but I am working on that.

My child knows the sign of the cross, the rosary, the guardian angel prayer, the lords prayer and a few others. She has basic knowledge of the holy trinity and understands the significance of the different holy days of the year. My child reads at about a grade 4 level.

I was born to catholic parents but my catholic education was of course left to my grandfather who taught me and took me to mass, unfortunately he passed away when I was eight. I have now returned to church but my local parish doesn’t offer any rcia classes at all. I have been completing an online apologetic’s class in my own time. I have also been studying the bible and I am looking to expand on my own resources for self teaching and to ensure that there is a variety of resources in my home for my family.

I am mostly looking to increase my knowledge and understanding and to be able to teach my daughter alot more.

The books I have ordered so far are Eerdman’s Handbook To The Bible, The Two-Edged Sword by John McKenzie, Understanding the Bible by Ignatius Hunt, Life of Christ by Fulton Sheen, My Prayer Book by Fr. Lasance

I have not yet ordered anything for my daughter as I wasnt sure where to start.

I will certainly download some mp3s for my commute to work Thank you.

I would suggest checking out any books by Scott Hahn. I read his Reasons to Believe, which is on apologetics. It was very informative and helped me to gain a better understanding of the church’s specific beliefs. He has works on a variety of subjects within the church. Here is a link to his website where you can take a look: scotthahn.com/

A fiction book that you (and maybe your daughter when she is a little older) might enjoy is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It is primarily about each individual’s journey through life and finding what God means for you to do with your life. I have heard that his other works are very good, too, though I have not read them yet.

I hope this helps! God bless.

Lefty22 that was a most helpful link it not only gives me some solid recommended readings but also has a link to online bible studies. Thank you so much.
God Bless

As a returning Catholic–I have found the “Meaning of the Mass” by Fr. Jeremy Driscoll to be MOST informative and has really enhanced by experience of the mass. I’m even buying the same book for my dad who has gone all his life but has lost a lot of the meaning. I give it 👍👍

It’s sort of basic and perhaps a little bland, but I often go back to the CCC.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is wonderful! Written very beautifully and profoundly…a rich text. Make sure you have and use this. And the compendium of the Catechism

Ignatius Press
Scepter Publishers (the Navarre!)
