Suggestions for effective porn site filter programs

Hi, I want to prevent myself, (or anyone else), from being able to get on porn sites on my computer. But I really don’t know what programs are out there. Any suggestions?

I recently moved our family over to “opendns”…it sits on / operates from your wireless router if you have one. Install was easy. It’s free. Nice thing is you don’t have to run around to more than one computer to upgrade/update/check on things. Requests all channel through the router and get checked there.

It’s free and it was recommended by a friend of mine who studies up on these things and who is a very senior level programmer.

May take some skill (or more like a slow, virtuous patience) to follow the instructions…and to sort of figure the settings and logs out. But it’s effective and free and easy to maintain.

He also recommended for virus/spam issues “AVAST” another free program. I have not yet tried that one out yet.

Also consider - just a suggestion - praying more - conversing more with God - while you surf…asking the Lord to help you discern what to spend your time on…Lord, shall we check out the mail, what weather are you bringing us this week. Are there any good movies for the family to watch. Might it be time to close the laptop and go for a walk with my wife?

Kind of harder to move from that sort of intimate, uninterrupted conversation with God into porn sites. Discern your time/navigation with God, in other words. Just a thought.

This is very wise. And somehow I’ve never heard it before.

I’ve heard wonderful things about OpenDNS. I’m a big personal fan of K9 Web Protection, which, like OpenDNS, is free. It sits on top of the the client computer’s TCP/IP stack, so, even though it’s on your own computer, it does affect all browsers. It also has the best categorization lists and auto-sorting algorithms I’ve ever seen. Not perfect (no filtering algorithm is or can be), but very very good.

A note, however: you may find, fairly soon, that the web filter doesn’t help you with your problem. Any filter can be bypassed, and you may find yourself spending hours trying (honestly or dishonestly) to do so – until, in frustration, you uninstall it, and you’re back where you started. The fundamental problem is inside you: it’s the desire, the longing, the burning lust for porn, which you feed internally in a hundred different ways. That lust has to be killed, and that can only be done through prayer, sacraments, and constant fasting (the fasting does not have to be severe, but you have to find something every single day that you can deny yourself and offer up to God). Installing an internet filter is a little bit like putting a bandaid on an open shotgun wound: covering the wound isn’t going to help until you can stop the bleeding.

Safe Eyes is good…but will require some programing and a person to moderate it…
