I wear the brown scapular. I realize part of the point of wearing it is so that it reminds one of the faith. But I find that I am constantly having to tuck it under my shirt. Especially the back part - it often ends up sticking out like a rogue tag as I go about my day.

Do others have this problem and if so, how do you weigh down your scapular to make it stay in place?

This is just a thought; I have no idea if it will work or not. It should be possible to buy a tiny, round lead sinker. Sinkers have holes in them and it may be possible to sew the sinker to the woollen back of the scapular. If you try this, let me know how it goes. 🙂

I’ve found that larger cloth pieces (1"x2") for example and a longer cord (18") keeps the scapular fairly front-and-back balanced for me. I regularly check my rear cloth piece though.

This is not from experience, but could you hang a small medal or cross on each side to weigh it down. Saw this picture online:

I don’t think there is a way, the thing is not to be ashamed if people see it,

Hmm - I’ve never had the problem and I’ve been wearing the Brown Scapular since 1982. It does tend to hang lower in front (and I’ve seen a photo of Blessed Pope John II wearing one that, like mine, hangs down to just at - or below - the heart). I’ve had so many over the years - I’m tough on them and just wear them out - but I’ve never had a problem with the rear cloth acting as an annoying ‘tag’!

I have heard that cutting a small slit in one side of the scapular and inserting a Miraculous Medal (or something similar) helps.

They also have leather frame pouch’s for them which protect and add weight and eliminates wear. I have never used these, but I have seen one worn by a close friend.

Items with lead usually have “warnings” about the health issues with lead. I usually avoid items that come with this warning, as I figure I should use something that does not need a warning.

The idea of putting a medal inside or beside the patches is good.

Glass beads or buttons are another good way to add weight without the lead.

I have heard of some women using a safety pin to attach it to their bra.

I have about ten medals on mine and that weighs it down. 😃

But seriously, it works…

What I did was tie a knot with the two cords in front so the front piece seems to hang from one string rather than two. The knot adds bulk I suppose and pulls the front piece down a bit. Doing this, the rear part is pulled up to the base of the neck. I have never had a problem with either the front or the back coming outside of my shirts.
