One of my friends posted this on his timeline. How should I respond to this?

Depends on whether by Rome he/she means the Catholic Church, or the ancient Roman Empire.

It seems like your friend was speaking of Ancient Rome
 
You know your friend best to guess if this is an attack on the Catholic Church. I have seen the comment, or similar by Christians and the reference I’d to the “Rome” and “Romans” who used crucifixion as punishment.

I know hard to believe, but sometimes it’s not all about you. 🙂

I guess I would have to ask, why you specifically jumped to the conclusion that this person was refering to the Holy See versus Rome/Roman Empire? Was there more to the post that led you to believe differently?
 
… and isn’t it wonderful how all now look to Rome
as the Holy See of the Catholic Church,
from which the cross of Christ
is proclaimed to this day
with its message of REDEMPTION and LIFE.

Thanks, everyone! I never really thought of it that way. There IS some background to this, so I immediately jumped to conclusions.

And your conclusion COULD be right. But the best response is to assume that they mean Romans. Not catholics. But frankly, I would ask.
