Suicide in the event of capture

The Russian air force for more than weeks, relentlessly were bombing the city of Sarandib and the surrounding villages. And for all this time the rebels could not answer back to Russian air terrorists.
Saradin is not occupied by the terrorists of ISIS, as tells the Russian press. This town has long been under the control of rebels, supported by Turkey. The Turks obviously helped to “buy in the military” MANPADS.
Filippov knew that by bombing the cities he will not be spared, and was killed on the spot when landing.

On the philosophical level, the answer is clear. Suicide is never permissible for any reason. It is always objectively gravely sinful (as is promoting it under any circumstances, as some in this thread are doing).

The only area of discussion is regarding the question of subjective culpability. On that front there’s little that can be said regarding someone who’s mental state is completely unknown to us. In any case, my point was simply to advise caution, actual suicidal people may read this, and it would obviously be bad to make suicide seem hopeful for them.

This reminds me of a question i was researching several years ago. When the Muslims were conquering places in Europe and it was known that any women captured would be raped and sold into slavery, would it be moral for such a woman, at point of capture, throw herself out a window to kill herself to prevent that from happening. The answer is no, since that rejects the ability of G_D to use that situation to bring about the salvation of souls.

If it’s the incident I’m thinking of, I’m not sure it was suicide. He was about to be captured or killed so he called in air support to bomb his position. His purpose would seem to be to bomb the enemy, not to kill himself, even if that outcome was a highly likely side-effect of this.

Likewise dude. Either way, I’m not directly ending my own life. A POW camp is incentive enough for running and gunning. Whether they end your existence or you put a grenade in your stomach, becoming a prisoner isn’t a good outcome.

I’m more objecting to the idea that you wouldn’t cooperate under torture. What if you were wounded and unable to keep fighting and they took you alive? Still think you’d He-Man it and refuse to spill your guts indefinitely?

None of knows what we would do under those circumstances. What we know is what is right. What would be right would be:
  1. Do not commit suicide.
  2. Do not give away information detrimental to one’s country.
It should also be added that, while none of us knows how we’d respond, holding out would by no means be impossible. There are many martyrs who underwent terrible tortures rather than deny Christ, the same could be done by one whose captors demanded to know information which could not be licitly revealed.

I said I wouldn’t cooperate. That means I’m not gonna be taken in alive! 🤨 I never intend to be tortured. But since you’ve veered the Thread in that direction, I’ll indulge your challenge.

I doubt any of us would withstand serious torture and information extraction. You, me, and everyone else would likely become blathering fools crying for mercy. After all, who could withstand the Strappado? 😫 The moral to this story is: Don’t Get Caught and Don’t Become a POW.

There are about a billion scenarios in which you might be taken alive even if you intended not to be.

My point is it’s very easy to Monday morning quarterback this and toss off cheap “Well, _I’d_do this…” statements but I can very easily imagine how this guy might have thought suicide was the only plausible way he could ensure the safety of information that could jeopardize the lives of his comrades. I agree that “fight to the death” or “indefinitely withstand torture” would be ideal, but judging someone for the split second decision they made in the moment rubs me the wrong way. And again, there are about a bazillion scenarios in which “fight to the death” might not have been a realistic option.

I’ve been through this before with another poster. I’m not judging him! Don’t insinuate something when you don’t know my intentions.
Also we cannot be sure the beliefs he was raised with forbade suicide. If he had been taught that suicide is acceptable under those circumstances, that also reduces guilt.
This post was spot on. The Major made a decision and that’s between him and God. I’m just stating my personal thoughts on what I would do if confronted with a “Capture Alive” situation. Maybe I’d escape. Maybe they’d shoot me accidentally due to my ferocity. Or maybe I’d be captured and brutally tortured. 😖

“Do not subject us to the final test!” 🙏

Was this a moral decision?
Very tough and I have no idea what I would do in the situation, but no it wasn’t, and we add what TheLittleLady quoted from the catechism.

CCC “Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.”

But it is still a sin.

For example, I watched a documentary regarding someone undercover in Nazi Germany, he was captured by the Nazi’s and he lost his cyanide capsule after being punched in the mouth it fell out to the ground, so he couldn’t then kill himself, which he was about to do, anyway long story short, he survived and actually negotiated the surrender of a high ranking Nazi Officer when the American’s were arriving which saved many lives.

God Bless

This kind of bravado is awfully easy from behind your computer.
It is, but it is true nonetheless, I don’t know what I would do if I ever had to face such horrible options, but Id like to think I would never aid them in killing me, so if they wanted to capture me, id like to think I would keep swinging until they put me down or id keep trying to escape until they killed me.

For example, they always say never let kidnappers take you to a second location, so if you were about to be kidnapped, my advice would be to fight them off any way you can, even if they shoot and kill you in the process, so be it, since if they kill you, they were going to do it anyway at the second location and probably much worse where police and ambulance can’t find you or come to your aid.

God Bless

Thank you for reading.

Precisely. Well said!

Read my previous posts please. You’re arriving LATE to the discussion. I already discussed my views and made my closing statement. I never said “I wouldn’t crack under interrogation”, only that I wouldn’t be taken in alive.

This topic has been exhausted and I have no intention to engage in it and further.
