Does a person who commits suicide go to Purgatory or do they go straight to Hell?

I pray it’s purgatory. I am only making my own opinion here, but a person who commits suicide is not thinking clearly and sees only one way out. They may under many influences such as mental disease and defect or drugs. We cannot know or judge that moment when the decision was made.

I hope and pray.
 
The killing of a person (even if they kill themselves) is grave matter. But we don’t know if the person has full consent or full knowledge needed to be a mortal sin. It is in the hands of Christ, who will make a perfect judgement on it.
 
In Dante’s “Inferno,” they are in Hell, in the “Wood of Suicides.”

In truth, I think the Church does not say with any certitude what happens to persons who end their own life. But I am sure that the outcome is NOT good, and IS very bad, no matter what.

The key thing, I think, is to move Heaven and Earth, to do whatever it takes, to prevent suicides.
 
We don’t know. We do know that suicide is considered a mortal sin. But we don’t know if they were aware of it. We don’t know the heart. We just don’t know. We don’t know that they didn’t have a moment of perfect contrition immediately before they died. We can pray for them though. At the worst it will be ineffective, at the best it could help lessen their time in purgation.
 
it is possible for God to save even a soul that commits suicide, the bible says the unforgivable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, not suicide…also the CCC speaks about suicide
 
CCC 2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

Only God knows the state of mind of the person who has committed suicide. There may be reduced culpability depending on the state of mind at the time.

However, whenever anyone asks this question and people answer it I have never seen anyone mention (so I will) that if the person was already in a state of mortal sin then whether they are culpable or not for the act of suicide that does not let them off the hook for existing mortal sins. Therefore we should not assume that a suicide will be saved even if they are not culpable for that particular act.
