Summer Philosophy Reads

Hi y’all,

I have read a lot of philosophy in the past and I love to read this stuff to get insights into the world of great minds and to deeper my personal logic and reason through many different philosophers both secular and religious.

I was wondering what some of y’alls favorite philosophy reads are, hopefully more the primary sources and not as much of the second hand sources or fiction books.

You’ve probably read it but you can’t beat the Summa Theologiae by Aquinas for great philosophy! The City of God by Augustine is also great, providing the first ‘philosophy of history.’ And of course there’s old Plato, especially his Apology, the Republic, and the Phaedo. If you want something more modern you can turn to Josef Pieper’s Leisure the Basis of Culture or his The Philosophical Act or something by C.S. Lewis (not necessarily a “philosopher” but very philosophical) maybe his essay “Man or Rabbit.” If you are looking for something a little lighter (although not an original source and fictionalized) the Socrates meets… series by Peter Kreeft is always fun.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I have not yet read through all of the Summa yet and that is top on my to-read list! Also the City of God is sitting on my shelf ready to be read. You can’t ever go wrong with re-reading multiple times any work by Plato. I have not heard of Pieper before but I will probably check him out next time I go to the bookstore. C. S. Lewis is amazing in all of his writings. Dr. Kreeft is one of my all time favorite writers and philosophers!!

Those Merton’s Seven Storey Mountain is a compelling book everyone should attempt.
