sunburn

Greetings from a toasty-red Allegra!

I have always been susceptible to sunburn, to the extent that I wear a moisturizer with sunscreen every day on my face. However, the past year has been ridiculous! Pretty much every time I’ve been outdoors in my bathing suit, I’ve been really heavily burned. I’m using the same really-high-SPF sunscreen that my pediatrician recommends for my bald-as-a-boiled-egg, bone-china-skinned infant (and it works perfectly for him!) but it isn’t working for me. Is it normal for one’s skin to be more susceptible to sun as they get older? The issue is primarily my shoulders and neck, as I always wear a hat for additional protection for my face. Does anyone have a product they’d recommend, or shall I just resign myself to a life of swimming in a t-shirt like a Baptist? Do they make rash guard swimsuits for grownup people?
I could be wrong, but aren’t really high SPF sunscreens kind of a scam? A few years ago I heard on the news that any SPF above 45 isn’t worth the extra $$$. Things could have changed since then, though.

I guess I don’t have much experience with sunscreen since I don’t go outside during the day much. I take my kids out in the early morning and evening and spend the afternoon indoors. I always check the UV Index and stay inside if it’s above 3. I hate being out in the heat anyways.

Hope you feel better. 🙂

I wear cover ups whenever I’m out of water. I burn really easily and that’s the best solution I’ve found (in addition to reapplying etc etc.)

My husband bought me an aloe plant a few years ago and it comes in handy for all kinds of skin soothing purposes.
I do too, and mostly for modesty’s sake. The burns happened when I was sort of halfway in the water, swimming in the shallow river for extended periods of time. I didn’t get them when we went to the pool, because we were in the pool. My arms and legs don’t seem to burn, and I protect my face with extra stuff and hats, so it’s mostly my shoulders, back and neck.

Soooo crunchy!

(And very practical!)
$4 well spent!

(It has grown exponentially, though, and I have moved it to larger pots twice, and it will soon require a third, even though it gets used fairly frequently.)

My kids think it’s awesome, too, which is a perk - what boy wouldn’t love a plant that squirts slime?

My arms will, but my legs don’t, and it is a huge mystery to me. I have tried to get them to tan a little just so they don’t look like dead white things, but it fails. Meanwhile my husband gets a great golfer’s tan line every summer (and he doesn’t even golf! :p)

(I wonder if it has to do with shaving? Anyway, something I’ve wondered about for a long time.)

I hear you on the shallow water. My mother in law is very fair skinned and she wears one of those full-coverage but not wetsuits, and maybe by the time I’m her age I’ll want that, but they look…like a little much.

Maybe a fitted rash guard top? If such a thing exists. So many full-coverage swim things are just…ugly.

My big issue with my current rash guard is that it tends to balloon at the bottom. But I have seen ones in catalogs with a draw string at the bottom that might fix that issue.

Your aloe vera plant sounds awesome.

Believe it or not, the best relief from a bad sunburned is Apple cider vinegar! It really helps calm and soothe when nothing else will. Totally worth smelling like a salad 🙂

Offer it up to the souls burning in purgatory and quit your bitching

Above post (by banned user) reported for rudeness, just to avoid a flood for the mods 🙂

Not necessarily a scam, but possibly not as effective as people think.

30 should be the minimum and 50 the max.

As a kid, and young adult I burned all the time. Now that I am older I generally use sunscreen at the lake or pool. I lather my kids with spray as well. I think with 5 kids maybe two times they burned.

However as I age, I’ve noticed less and less of burns. I don’t know if I wear more clothes or not but I have noticed a reduction in burns with an increase in weight. 😉
Yup, that’s right my belly button seems not to ever burn like when I was younger, and thinner…:…

I haven’t got much in that department. If I can find a top that covers my shoulders and neck, I’ll be in business.
Check out Coolibar… I just bought a hat from them(SPF 50).
they also have some cute swimshirts, ect. SPF 50.
They’re based in Australia, I believe. They are a bit expensive, but worth it.

The post I was referring to was deleted. 🙂 It was after Strydersroom’s last post.

When it’s an ad thread or something, I typically don’t post “reported” afterwards because it just makes more work for the moderators (or so I understand), but I did for that because it was unlikely the whole thread would get pulled for one unrelated mean post, and I wanted to avoid a flood of reports for the same post by multiple users.

If that makes sense…:whacky:

Try aloe gel. I burn fast and bad too.

There are apps with the UV index information. With that, choose wisely when to go out, for how long and with what on. It’s good!

Check the side effects for any medications or supplements you take.

It used to be impossible for me to sunburn in the past, but I learned the hard way that medications I currently take decreased the residence to sunburn that I naturally had. It is listed as a potential side effect.

That’s interesting, but I really don’t think I have Lupus.
Allow me to clarify: I didn’t say you had lupus. I suggested that if your skin reacts to exposure to sunlight in an unusual and or an unusually bothersome way, it is worth asking your doctor about it.

There are many things that can cause this, but that’s about as far as anyone here ought to go. Because of forum rules, I want to be clear that I’m not giving medical advice, but merely suggesting that this sounds like a problem that may call for real medical advice, rather than folk remedies.

The posters who suggest that your doctor will want to know about any changes you’ve made in medicines or supplements you take, et cetera, are spot-on. Before seeing your doctor, think hard about all the things you’ve changed since before your skin acted like this.
