In the Novus Ordo, what happens on the Sunday after New Years and before epiphany?

In the Ordinary Form** of the Mass, the first Sunday after New Year’s is celebrated as the Feast of Epiphany, at least in the US.

This year, the Feast of the Holy Family is the first Sunday after Christmas (the 28th) and Epiphany is celebrated the second Sunday after Christmas (January 4th) although it technically falls on Wednesday the 6th.

So-- to answer the question-- we celebrate Epiphany on the first Sunday after New Year’s and before Epiphany. 😉

As a further bit of trivia, the Feast of the Holy Family was originally celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany, but it was moved to the first Sunday after Christmas so it would fall within the Christmas season.

Midori is correct. For the Latin rite, the first Sunday after January 1 is the Epiphany—at least in the U.S. where the feast has been transferred from January 6 to that day. In 2016, that will be January 3rd.

That probably coincided with ending the Christmas season earlier at the baptism of the Lord. Christmas used to be 40 days long and ended on the Feast of the Presentation (Feb 2).

In those countries where epiphany is always on the sixth, what is the name of this Sunday?

What’s the readings for Mass?
Here are the readings for the Epiphany:

usccb.org/bible/readings/010316.cfm

First Reading — Isaiah 60:1–6
Response — Psalm 72:11
Psalm — Psalm 72:1–2, 7–8, 10–11, 12–13
Second Reading — Ephesians 3:2–3a, 5–6
Gospel Acclamation — Matthew 2:2
Gospel — Matthew 2:1–12

These are the readings for all three years of the liturgical cycle (A, B, and C) and are the readings whether Epiphany is celebrated on the Sunday after New Year’s or on the traditional January 6.

However, the OP asked what the readings are for the Second Sunday after Christmas, not Epiphany.

Second Sunday after Christmas (where Epiphany is celebrated on Jan 6) would be:

Sir 24:1-4, 12-16
Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20
Eph 1:3-6, 15-18
John 1:1-18 or John 1:1-5, 9-14

:o I wasn’t sure because his post did not specify, but considering the post above his question, you are probably right. Ah well, I guess we have both bases covered then.

How’s that if the Sunday after Epiphany, The Baptism of the Lord, is still within the Christmas Season? What was changed?
