Sunday and Confession: Help!

Long story short, I just realized that I have Mass tomorrow (yes, I forgot, my bad), and my family has planned for us to finish painting the house (they don’t practice the faith). I’m going to try to ask my Mom that, if I work hard, she could drive me to a later Mass (I’m 100% sure she won’t be okay if I leave early in the morning to go). If I can’t go, should I go confess it? I’m honestly going to try to get to Mass, but this time my family might not be willing to let me go.

Are you over 18? Do you have a car? If so, it really is your decision, and hopefully your mother will understand. If you are 15 and she has to drive you and says no, its not your sin. All you can do is ask. Hopefully she will be ok with you going.

If you cant go, it cant hurt to confess it, but I don’t think it will be a mortal sin if you try hard to go and someone prevents you.

How far is the church? Can you walk? Can you cycle there? Is there a bus service that can get you near the church? Are there any neighbors who are Catholic and who could take you in their car? Do you have a Catholic friend you can phone to see if they can take you?

There may be other ways to get there if you family refuse to take you. Perhaps, for the future, you can try to find other ways to get to Mass so that you don’t have to be dependent on family members, since they do not practice the faith.

You really should plan ahead and do whatever it takes to get to Mass, since this is very, very important - more important than anything else in your life.

If you genuinely cannot get to mass, for whatever reasons (and the options given in a previous post aren’t possible) you can make a spiritual communion:

A spiritual communion is not an equal substitute for going to mass, ever; but if it is the best that is possible, it is better than not thinking of Our Lord and the Blessed Sacrament at all.

If I can’t go, should I go confess it?

You need to make every attempt to go to Mass. You also can’t confess that you are going to be missing Mass. That’s like saying, “I’m sorry God that I will offend you when I go out and murder that guy.” If you make a reasonable attempt to get to Mass, but are impeded beyond your control, then it’s not a Mortal sin. That being said, if you’re an adult (18+), you need to take responsibility for your faith, even if that means saying no to your parents so you can fulfill your Sunday obligation.

Furthermore, it is a sin to do unnecessary manual labour on Sunday. Moral theologists have agreed that anything over 3 hour is grave matter.

BTW: How do you forget that your have to go to Mass on Sunday?

Are you a teen or an adult? I don’t ASK to go, I go. I would actually do it the other way around. I’d find the earliest mass possible and go. I would not ASK, I would inform. "I will be available for work at 8:30 or 9 or whatever. It’s not their soul you are responsible for, it’s your own.
