Does anyone remember hearing the Angelus bells? We lived about 1/2 mile from church, but could hear the nightly bells as if we right there.

Oh yes, we lived a mile from the church but could hear the Angelus and the death knell whenever a parishioner died. We always listened to find out if it was a man or a woman.

Yes! 🙂 They rang at 6, 12 and 6. And they had to be rung manually, none of this computerized stuff like they have today.

I miss hearing those bells so much. I don’t think we have one church in the diocese I now live in that does that anymore.

Just out of curiosity, I am wondering what the typical American parish Mass schedule was like prior to Vatican II? I know there wouldn’t be Saturday vigil Masses, but how many Masses would usually be celebrated on Sunday? And was there only one High Mass and the rest were Low Masses, or were churches allowed to celebrate multiple High Masses?

Thanks for any insights.

J.
It depended on the size of the church, and the number of priests on staff.

Larger churches usually had more masses scheduled.

Much like today.

Most people preferred to attend the low masses, back in the day. Whether they were “allowed” to do otherwise, they usually just didn’t.

In the 1990’s, heard them all time, when living on the South Side. Several churches within earshot of my former domicile over there, unfortunately one was razed for parking and several of the others have been converted into condos.

I don’t know if the remaining churches are still ringing them, I haven’t been over there for years.
