I’m an overseas contract worker. I’m working in a construction firm. Our project right now is to construct a port in Madagascar. The construction site as well as our stay-in camp is very remote.
I have a question(s) regarding our Catholic obligation to attend Sunday masses.
I attended Sunday mass. But their language used is totally different from my native language. They don’t have any English mass here. Their Sunday mass is scheduled (I think) once every morning only. Even if I don’t understand the whole mass I’m still eager to attend Sunday masses.
A few months of working, our company does not require us to work on Sundays. But lately, they require us to work on every other Sunday because the job that I’m doing for that week did not finished and they (my boss) want my report as soon as possible. I don’t want to disobey my employer as much as I can. If they ask me to work on Sunday, I will work on Sunday. If I had to work on Sunday, I just pray the Spiritual Communion. There are scriptures in the bible that mention about obeying our masters or leaders such as. 1 Peter 2:18-19, Ephesians 6:5-8 and Hebrews 13:17. This bothered me much.
The first time I did not attend Sunday mass due to scheduled work, I go to confession. I had difficulty in approaching the parish priest because he also does not understand English. Though I try to convince him that I want to confess my sins, but later on he understand me the word “confession”. I was so happy that time that I confess my sins. If possible if I commit a mortal sin(s) I had to confess right away.
My questions are: Is there any consideration not to go to Sunday mass if the medium of language used is totally different from the person attending the mass? In my case even going to confession is very difficult since (I think) all parish priest here does not understand English, do I need to confess my sins of not attending mass on this situation before attending next Sunday mass or communion? What will I do to prevent me from committing mortal sins of not attending this Sunday mass? Is it enough to pray the Spiritual Communion?
