Sunday mass

I live in Malaysia, which is basically Muslim country. In my state, Sunday is seen as a normal day, so our weekends on Friday-Saturday. So I need to go to school and mass is not even said on a Sunday in my state. Is this a valid excuse not to attend mass on day off obligation? (Noting a parish is 60 miles away, and I have no transport and I have school)

Hi TradionalWay,

I would say that it is. But I would counsel you to get dispensation from your local priest.

If you have Internet, how about watching EWTN’s Mass broadcast, I believe that they broadcast their Mass online. I am sure that there are some parishes here in the US that broadcast their Masses online as well, it’s not the same, but it’s much better than nothing.

Well I do watch mass online time to time but I didn’t know it would be considered valid…
 
If you have no opportunity to go to Mass, then you have no obligation to.

And watching Mass on TV doesn’t substitute for going in person, but it’s one way you can ‘be there in spirit’

Go any other day you can. Do not feel responsible for this. You are wanting to go to Mass. It is not the Day that is important but the dedication of 1 day a week to Go. Many people in the West have the same problem as they work on Sundays: pilots, doctors, electicity and water keepers and so on.
 
I hope someday in your state and close to you that Mass will be available for you on Sunday for you to attend which is something many take for granted in many nations. If a Daily Mass is said close to you and on a day you do not have class, do your best to go to it.

Until then, take advantage of watching online broadcasts of Mass, pray, etc.
 
Yep I’d say you are relieved of your requirment.

However, if you do know other Catholics, I’d suggest that you hold a prayer servise at your house or have a little get together to keep the day holy if possible.
 
It’s worthwhile to check masstimes.org, if you haven’t done so. You still may not find a Sunday mass to attend, but you may discover a church or two you weren’t aware of. For instance, here is the first page when I punched in Sarawak:

It looks like most of the churches in that state have at least one mass, at 7 or 8 AM. That may not help you if you have school at 8. I also didn’t look up every state, so maybe you’re right that your state has no masses on Sunday.

Also keep in mind that you can fulfill your Sunday obligation by attending a mass on Saturday evening. Evening is usually understood as 4pm or later in churches in the US; you may want to check to see if your bishop has interpreted it any differently.

Good luck! You may not be able to fulfill your obligation for Sunday, but it’s good to attend even if it’s not Sunday
 
Do you live near any other Catholics that go to Mass? If you do maybe you could ask them if you could go with them. Or you could contact the priest, maybe he could find someone would be willing to come and get you so you could attend.
 
You may be stuck with not being able to go to Mass. If you genuinely cannot get to Mass then you are relieved from fulfilling the obligation. Other alternatives that might be possible are getting a lift to Mass from another person; a group of you who may be in the same situation arranging transport; going to Mass on Saturday evening; you can also go to a Eucharistic Liturgy in any Catholic Church (I don’t know if there are any Eastern or Oriental Catholic churches you can go to).

If you can contact the priest, it would be good to contact him and get a formal dispensation.

Watching a celebration of Mass online or on the TV or listening to one on radio is commendable but it does not of itself fulfil the obligation. Likewise, it is to be highly recommended to go on any weekday you can but again it does not fulfil the obligation.

This is something that I would seriously consider discussing with my priest.
