I apologize if this is a silly question, but this whole Coronavirus situation has me curious- public masses have been stopped, but everybody seems be watching mass online. Is ‘attending’ online mass obligatory? If so, do we need to watch it live, or is it ok to set aside an hour to ‘attend’ a prerecorded mass? What about watching the mass while jogging or doing the dishes? Thank you, and stay safe out there everyone!! 🙂

No it’s not. Watching Mass on a livestream is not the same as attending it in person. It is, however, an excellent idea regardless at this time.

I’ve heard many refer to boredom during these times of quarantines. These people should consider themselves lucky if boredom is their main concern. Voluntary shutdowns of businesses could lead to 20 to 30% unemployment. We have far bigger problems than boredom.
I don’t know why a good Catholic would not choose to at least watch Mass if he or she cannot attend Mass at any time during the week. One hour in the entire week.

The bishops that have suspended Masses have dispensed everybody from the Sunday and holyday obligations. In many cases, they had dispensed people from the obligation even before Mass was suspended, the idea being that people who were afraid of catching the virus were not forced to come to Mass and be around a big group of people.

There is no requirement that you watch a livestreamed Mass and even if you do, it does not meet any sort of Mass obligation.
