Sunday obligation fullfilled?

I know I should pay attention at mass, but if I go to mass but don’t pay attention is my Sunday obligation still fulfilled? I have been going but I keep worrying that I have to go again because I didn’t pay attention. Should I be going again if I didn’t pay attention the first time? And I have not been going again though. Was this grave matter (that I didn’t pay attention and then didn’t go again)?

You should try to pay attention, but as long as you’re physically there, that satisfies the obligation.
 
Ok, but if you know of one could you give me a qoute from the bible or the Catachism or something? I don’t mean to sound doubtful, I just want to be sure.

Maybe you should look into the Examination of Conscience for the Scrupulous!
 
You are supposed to ‘attend’ Mass.

Does a mom w/ little kids pay attention the whole time? Or even most of the time? Do you think she has to go again?

I mean if I could’ve paid attention but didn’t. Not I tried to pay attention but couldn’t.

I in know way ment to say that a parent or other caretaker of children might have to go again, it wouldn’t be there fault if they couldn’t pay attention.
 
Your obligation if fulfilled. The obligation is to attend mass, not to pay attention.

I don’t always pay attention during the mass/liturgy. But I also don’t always pay attention in school, during a lecture, attending a conference, speaker etc. It is just natural to drift off some of the time. Everyone does. I don’t think there is anything wrong about this.

You may even attend a Sunday Mass in a language you don’t understand a single word of. Spanish, Polish, Latin, Vietnamese, etc. It counts just as much.
 
You have to be careful here. The obligation, as described in canon 1247, is to participate in the Mass.

I would say that he opposite of participating at Mass would be to be there as an observer. I’m taking this from Scott Hahn’s conversion story, where he originally attended Mass for academic purposes (to see what was going on), and he was not going to participate, but only observe.

What would be participating? Did you stand and kneel at the appropriate times? Did you say the response? Did you go up to receive the Eucharist? Or did you sit in the pew spaced-out the whole time? If it was the last one, then I would say that it wasn’t participating.

… you are supposed to be very attentive striving to give your full attention at mass , if you have trouble you really should take it to confession and get specific advice to see what is ok or not in your particular case and whether you fulfilled your sunday obligation , if scruples take it to confession for thorough advice and abide by it is best i’m sure , normally you must attend mass again properly if you didn’t concentrate as you should , but see your confessor as it may be ok in your case if your having trouble or scrupulous ,

“be part of” it seems would be appropriate.

(a variation of the word is used in the EF Offertory, by the way, as “partakers”)

the translators instead chose the English cognate “participate.”

Incidentally it’s not Saturday evening but Saturday post-Vespers.

yes it is
do you really think even very devout Catholics pay attention every minute they are at Mass?

Doesn’t “vespere” mean “in the evening”? Maybe Latin uses a differenct word for vespers (newadvent.org/cathen/15381a.htm - although it still isn’t 100% clear to me…
