We have a Children’s Liturgy of the Word at one of the Masses and I think it is a great idea. The grades are K-2. The children are not disruptive, and when they come back they are quiet and go to their seats nicely.
I can remember sitting through Masses as a young child ( Latin Masses no less) and being totally zoned out because I didn’t understand a thing, and the sermon was way above my head. One time I was fidgeting and a lady was saying her Rosary during Mass and I accidentally leaned against her Rosary and broke it. Then I got yelled at.
I did like Bible stories and when I was staying with my Protestant grandparents, they would put me in the Sunday School while the Church service was going on. I loved it and because the lessons were geared to children, I learned a lot. That is why I think it is good for our young children to have their own Liturgy of the word so they can have these things taught to them in an understandable and enjoyable way. Plus, they are also attending Mass, and learning to behave in Church.
