I have attended several Sunday Vespers and it is a beautiful experience. But, it seems like I continually get lost and am not able to follow along with my missal. While I am perfectly content listening to the beautiful prayers, I wish I could do better at following along so I know what is being said in English.

Are the Sunday Vespers the same every Sunday? Could anyone give me some advice?

Thank you all.

Sunday Vespers (Evening Prayer) are part of “The Liturgy of the Hours”. This follows a four week psalter. The antiphon for the Canticle of Mary and the closing prayer change every Sunday, according to the yearly liturgical calendar for cycles A ,B & C.

you should be able to buy the book called “Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours” at any good Catholic book store. Some have liturgical calendars for several years. Another alternative to follow would be to get a book called “The Ordo”. it gives the readings for each day of the year, including Sundays, and also will indicate which week of the psalter you are in for following in the Liturgy of the Hours.

Thank you Deacon Ed B. I will go down to my local Catholic bookstore. Your help is very much appreciated.🙂

Assuming you’re talking about the Ordinary Form of Vespers, you would need Christian Prayer to follow it.

However, if you are attending Vespers in the Extraordinary Form according to the Breviary of 1962 (or so), Sunday Vespers would basically be the same from Sunday to Sunday, especially in the Green Seasons, in which case only the Collect at the end would change.
