I have a question:D

For six days God toiled then on the seventh he rested. For six days we toil on the seventh we rest. Keep the sabbath. for those of us who do not have any choice but toil on sunday what makes the sabath?? Is it being a sunday or is it what we do on that day?? I just want to know:)

There are many valid reasons for working on Sunday (Sabbath). Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Doctors, Nurses, and many other professions are routinely required to work on Sundays. Having to work on Sunday can be a valid reason for missing Mass. However, many parishes offer a Saturday Vigil Mass which is valid for the Sunday obligation. If you’re Catholic, and if it’s at all possible, you must fulfill your Sunday (Sabbath) obligation.

I understand this but is going to church the only thing that makes it the sabath?? If I can go to saturday mass and fulfill my obligation ( please keep in mind I find this more of a treat than obligation) then why do I read so much about going to church on suday as if to miss it was a sin, or am I wrong and as long as I go to church one time a week fulfilling my obligation? I am not trying to argue please understand that I also work on Saturday and by the time mass is held at 7pm I am asleep because I have to get up at 1230 in the morning and I do not work in a place where it is good or advisable not to be well rested. mass lets out around 8pm and I don’t know about you but I find it impossible to stop I dont know what its called but the wonderful high you get from spiritualy being refilled.

I could go to friday mass but I have no way to get there.

From the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

**“453. How does one keep Sunday holy? **
2177-2185 2192-2193
Christians keep Sunday and other days of obligation holy by participating in the Eucharist of the Lord and by refraining from those activities which impede the worship of God and disturb the joy proper to the day of the Lord or the necessary relaxation of mind and body. Activities are allowed on the Sabbath which are bound up with family needs or with important social service, provided that they do not lead to habits prejudicial to the holiness of Sunday, to family life and to health.
454. Why is the civil recognition of Sunday as a feast day important?
2186-2188 2194-2195
It is important so that all might be given the real possibility of enjoying sufficient rest and leisure to take care of their religious, familial, cultural and social lives. It is important also to have an opportune time for meditation, for reflection, for silence, for study, and a time to dedicate to good works, particularly for the sick and for the elderly.”

The numbers like “2186-2188 2194-2195” refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These can be looked up at scborromeo.org/ccc/ccc_toc2.htm .

God did not rest on the 7th day because he was tired…he is God afterall! He rested to set the example of how we should set aside one day each week to not think about work or business, or any one of the many things we have to deal with on a daily basis. This is a refreshing of the spirit, a renewal of the soul… which is why we go to mass. Unless it isn’t possible, we should refrain from work, household tasks… or whatever distracts us from the wonder and glory of God. We should dedicate the day to God by worship, by enjoying this beautiful world he created for us, or by taking the time to feel God all around us… in the scriptures, in nature, in our loved ones, etc…
