How is this service celebrated? This is a honest question. I am just curious.

You arrive at church at dawn and have a church service where the sermon is about Jesus rising from the grave as the sun rises outside. Even if it is not the correct Sunday for Communion (the first Sunday of the month in my old churches), you usually celebrate Communion at Easter Sunrise service.

That was my experience from my non-denominational/Methodist days. However, I became a full-fledged Catholic at Easter Vigil last night! WOOHOO!!

You question is a little confusing. Are you talking about at non-Catholic churches?

Catholic parishes can and do have sunrise services at Easter. It’s a Mass at sunrise. Nothing different about it from any other Mass-- although sometimes they are outside (ours was for many years). There are readings in the Lectionary for Mass at Dawn.

Thank you both for your answers. Yes, I imagine it’s kind of nice to have either a Mass or any other service done in the Cathedral of Nature. I read in one of Life of the Saints that this particular saint loves to go outside to pray. She said she felt a greater closeness to God.

When I leave the house at 6 o’clock in the morning to go to early Mass at 6:30, and there’s hardly any car on the road, I always rejoice and marvel at the new day - something like a preparation for Mass, because before I know it, I am talking to God and thanking him for all the goodness he sends our way.

Coming Home: Your name says it all. Congratulations! Rejoice and be glad! Alleluia! Alleluia!

To all of You: Happy Easter! Some also will say: Happy Resurrection Day! I like that, too.

It varies a lot. At the Methodist church my wife and I attend (we also attend the Episcopal church on Saturday evening, in case someone is wondering if I’ve switched churches!), they had a sunrise service this morning that included some of the readings from the Easter Vigil (which is an option for Methodists but is rarely practiced). I did not make it, but that’s what my wife told me from looking at the bulletin. The pastor of this church is a good friend of ours from grad school and very liturgical (he would rather like to be Orthodox and his wife talks about becoming Catholic). He’s the pastor of a small, rural Methodist church where they aren’t used to things like that, and he’s trying to bring them along slowly!
