Interestingly enough the book “The Church Impotant” makes the argument that sports have become the spiritual center for men in our nation, and what was once offered to men in churches is gone. It talks about the lack of a masculine message in most christian churches that once existed, and how without it many men look elsewhere for spirituality that they can understand. Return to the idea of the Church Militant and men will return to Church.The stadium holds, what, about 30,000 fans? Maybe 50,000? Out of how many people in the U.S. who can’t travel to the game? I can’t see that as a rational excuse for making it a national holiday!
Professional sports have become the national religion. So sad.
the Mass isnt celebrated for the people there, it is for God. we glorify him by our participation, but a mass with a small congregation in attendence, even if it is just 1 person or no people but the priest and a server still glorifies God. why cancel it? why cut out a chance for glory to be given to God simply because there is a football game on?I understand your point, but I, for one, am going to be at home watching the game, and will go to an earlier mass. (We usually go in the morning anyway.) What’s the point of the local parish celebrating a mass for an empty church? I’m sure there will be a few people, but if there are a half dozen other masses that people can attend, and the one during the game has been extremely low-attended in the past, why force it? It’s not as if they are cancelling all masses for the day, are they? That would be a huge problem.
I’m not aware of any churches in my area cancelling mass because of the Superbowl. And not everyone watches or even likes football- lots of my female friends and some of my guy friends aren’t plannig to watch the game. My son is in the Navy. His command made Monday a day off for most people since they will all be hung over. Sad.About 15 years ago, I told my wife that we would some day see the Monday after the Super Bowl turned into a national holiday and that this would be the first national holiday to be based on the hangovers incurred from caloric and alcoholic excess.
