Thanks for starting this topic.
I was very disappointed in the ads this year. Some of them were cute, but I didn’t think any of them were great.
I liked the Snickers ad, but I didn’t love it. And I can see where it might lead to controversy and accusations of stereotyping and gay-bashing. “What’s wrong with men kissing?” “Why does kissing imply that they’re gay?” And many people in the U.S. will ask, “Why is being gay something to be scorned?”
Usually Anheiser-Busch does such a good job, but not this year. I thought all of the Bud ads subtly displayed a violence and “death wish;” e.g., the rock-throwing ad, the hitchhiker ad (“He has an ax! He has a chainsaw!”). I remember in college studying liquor ads and learning that many of them include a “death wish,” as many people who drink alcohol harbor a “death wish.” These “violent” ads are very successful in selling alcohol. Hmmm…I guess someone at Anheiser Busch took the same class I did.
I didn’t really like the Bud dalmation ad either. The “mule” ad last year was so much better. OTOH, I thought this was probably the best of the ads yesterday.
I didn’t like the jungle office ads much. Dilbert does the same thing, only funnier.
The Coke ads were OK, but compared to past Coke ads, they weren’t that good. I did really like the Black History Month ad with the changing Coke bottle. OTOH, did Coke really contribute to helping advance the Civil Rights movement? If not, then I don’t like that they took credit for it in this ad.
The rapper ad was cute, but only if you knew who the rapper was. I wouldn’t have known if I hadn’t seen a preview of this ad at work on CNN. I’m sure a lot of old people like me didn’t get it.
Like I said, ho-hum.
