That ad was pulled by Ford. Sure made the news though… even so. I saw it on an interview done on NBC’s TODAY show where it was discussed.

Ford Pulls Lustful Super Bowl Car Ad
Thursday, February 3, 2005 1:30 PM EST
The Associated Press
By DAVID BAUDER

Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday yanked a planned Super Bowl advertisement that depicts a clergyman tempted by a new pickup truck after some victims of clergy sex abuse complained it made light of their trauma.

The company wants to keep the focus on its new truck model rather than any controversy, said Sara Tatchio, spokeswoman for Ford’s Lincoln division.

The ad shows a set of car keys placed on a collection plate. The clergyman finds a new Lincoln Mark LT truck in the parking lot, and lovingly caresses the exterior.

The car’s owner then enters the picture, with his little girl poking her head from behind him _ the implication being she had dropped the keys in the plate. The clergyman hands over the keys, then is depicted adding the letters L-T to a message board advertisting an upcoming sermon, to spell lust.

The Chicago-based Survivors Networks of those Abused by Priests believed the little girl’s presence in the ad with the clergyman and word “lust” had sexual overtones and that Lincoln was playing off the news of religious sex scandals to sell cars.

The survivors’ group urged Ford to pull the ad and, within hours of their complaint, the company obliged.

“We’re grateful for their prompt response,” said Barbara Blaine, SNAP’s president. “It shows their compassion and I think will spare lots of people a great deal of pain.”

Tatchio said Lincoln had conducted consumer testing of the ad and had no trouble. The company also made certain the clergyman depicted could not be confused for a Catholic priest.

Before Ford made the decision not to run the ad, Tatchio suggested that because of their experiences, the critics were seeing things in the ad that weren’t there.

“While we think it was a very unfortunate misunderstanding and were frankly surprised by the reaction of this one group, in the end” Ford decided it was more important to keep the focus on the truck, she said.

Lincoln hasn’t decided whether the ad will run elsewhere. It wasn’t cheap to produce: the company hired “The Cell” director Tarsem Singh to make the ad. Singer Cassandra Wilson and well-known producer Don Was recorded a version of the Billie Holiday song “Guilty” specifically for the background music.

Is there any reason why you quoted it so now it’s a gazillion plus 1?

The game is being promoted as being more family friendly this year. We shall see. Stand by the “Mute” and “Off” buttons on the remote.

It’s pretty funny how times have changed–Paul McCartney is now seen as a “safe” choice.

I watched the pre-game concert with Charlie Daniels. I was waiting to see if he cleaned up “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and they sure did clean it up! I have to admit it that “Son of a Gun” did not rhyme too well with the word “itch” in the song.

My husband and I were discussing how that song came out in the mid to late 70’s and I believe it was in the Top 40 using the the questionable phrase.

I did enjoy the pre-game festivities with the Declaration of Independence recited, the salute to our military and of course the salute to the “Greatest Generation”. That always brings a tear to my eye since I always admired both the military and our grandparents of the WWII generation. These folks have it together and God Bless them 🙂

That’s funny. I have always loved that Charlie Daniel’s song. On the radio and even seeing him in concert, it was alway “Son of a Gun”. I always thought it was one of those “cute” changes that let the bad word pop up in your mind without actually saying it. My son wanted the CD and I got it. Imagine our collective shock when the other word is on the CD. Now the kids censor it, yelling “BEEP” in their loudest voices when that phrase comes up.

Last night, my little one asked if this was going to be the one with the bad word. He was getting his censor ready but fortunately didn’t have to use it.

The half time show was awesome!!! The whole Super Bowl from start to finish was family friendly.

I don’t buy into the superbowl being a sin…I can’t wait to watch it. If you dont’ like it…don’t watch it. I think the commercials are humerous as they are intended to be…the halftime show will be tasteful unlike last year’s show…it is going to be a great game. I am a Colts fan, but since they aren’t in it this year…I am pulling for the Eagles…Go Eagles!!!
Dums, I thought you were smarter than to bet against the Patriots. 😛

I don’t understand why people who are concerned with watching the Super Bowl being a sin don’t just simply turn the TV off (or change the channel) for the halftime show. That’s what my family always does: we just pray the Rosary during halftime.

This thread is from **3 years **ago-- and was relevant then because the halftime performers chosen for the SB were indeed morally questionable. It seems the SB has moved back towards family friendly entertainment. This year, Tom Petty performed and there was nothing at all offensive in the performance, he sang 3 or 4 songs, took a bow, and that was it.

Why are you posting on this thread now instead of starting a new one?

Yeah, I realized this was an old thread immediately after I posted. Sorry.

Ah, but did he sing or lip-sync?? 😃

Not just complaining about football…other sports too…debacles of sex and violelnce…what comes next… uh…uh…uh…I know…I know…we sacrifice a virgin at halftime…
Now I’m not mister perfect…just a sinner …so don’t shoot me…shoot my message instead.
Who would want to waste a virgin by sacrificing him or her?

Well the phallic guitar penetrating the big pink heart was interesting imagery 😉

And he sang about sex and suicide

But I like Tom
He still looks and sounds good after 25 years

A much better show than a few years ago

And the Giants won too 👍
