Superbowl Sunday Mass Attendance

Do any of you notice if late afternoon Sunday Mass attendance drops during the Superbowl? When I was in Austin, our late Sunday afternoon Mass attendance plummetted, especially when the Cowboys were playing (during the Troy Aikman years:D ).

Some churches, according to NBC News, were actually planning Superbowl parties in order to boost attendance, but evidently the NFL pulled the plug on that because they didn’t want the Neilson ratings to suffer. When NBC showed the churches, there were some Protestant and Catholic ones included in the mix.

Of course, the dip in attendance would also depend on whose playing in the Superbowl on a given year. As I said, in Texas, attendance takes a big hit when the Cowboys play. Oddly enough, our Catholic radio station belongs to the Cowboys radio network. Go figure. I wish they would air Spurs games. 🤷
 
I am not aware of any Sunday afternoon masses around me. The college masses I know of all start in the early to late evening (7-9pm). This would put it in the second half, in what will probably be a blowout this year.
 
Heh. Our University Mass is normally at 7:30pm. They have added an extra Mass (with lots of advertising) at 5pm, as to not create a “tough decision” for most kids. Probably good thinking, as most would not think to go to an earlier Mass on campus.
 
Our late Sunday Mass is 5PM. Being here in Giants territory we do not expect a big turnout at this mass this week. We are expecting a large increase in attendance at the earlier masses and we even have mardi gras scheduled after the 9 and 10:30 Masses. Perhaps we will put out a few Giant pendants along with the mardi gras decorations. (in the parish hall, not in the church)
 
I guess it would never dawn on those who attend Sunday evening masses that they could go on Saturday to the vigil?
 
I don’t know about evening Masses since our parish doesn’t regularly have one. I imagine the 5:30pm Mass at the neighboring parish has rather light attendance.

But I do notice that the 9:00am Mass which is usually not so crowed as the 11:00am (last) Mass typically has a few more people on Superbowl Sunday. I’m not sure if people come earlier to get in a few more hours of pre-game celebrating or if the occasional Mass-goers are hoping to win some spiritual points for their teams.

It’s hard to know since even those attending the 11:am Mass have about three hours to get home before the game starts.

ya me either, what’s the big deal? There’s a Saturday night Mass and early morning one’s for a reason. :shrug:in our old Protestant church we always had a big superbowl party but that was long after Church was over and it was always in someones home. It’s always been 3pm as long as I can remember.
 
I’m not sure any of us think it’s a big deal. It’s more like an amusing observation of human nature.

And in my opinion, this forum needs a bit of humor every now and again.😃
 
Hey, we are having a “Mardi Gras” pot-luck after our 11 a.m. Mass with the promise that it will be over before the Super Bowl starts :rotfl:.

Makes no difference to me as no one in my family is all that interested in the game.

Now don’t anyone get offended please. we just aren’t into any sports in my family!

That’s why I stuck this into the forum! 👍 Sometimes we can get into some knock-down drag down stuff and I figured this might lighten things up a bit.😃
 
What super bowl?? just kidding…I usually go to morning Mass. We are a college town and when there is away games attendance is low. But packed during home game week-ends.
 
The latest Sunday Mass at my parish is at 12 pm, so the Super Bowl would have no effect on the Mass attendance.
 
I noticed this on the west coast, that nobody seems to go to Mass before 10:30 AM at the earliest. Mass here is done at the latest by Noon, with two or three Mass Sunday morning. No effect on Superbowl whatsoever.
