Dear Spoke:

People once called me Spoke too. They thought I was smart and logical. Now, I’m just mc^2.

Your question is a profound and difficult. For millennia brilliant people have struggled with it, like climbing Jacob’s ladder. I hope that you receive your answer, but it may not be found in this brief forum and it may not be found quickly. Please believe that I found it but it did not come from me alone.

It’s good that you are searching. Your search could begin with challenging whether all that you perceive really exists or not. You will find, that mc^2 may not exist, but you certainly do.

Read René Descartes writings, Book 31 in the “Great Books of the Western World,” by Encyclopaedia Britannica, Inc. You may enjoy his writings. The series is like a conversation for the western world of thoughts throughout the centuries. One drawback is that, you cannot challenge or ask for clarification from the original authors; but it is a rich source of thoughts.

I will pray for you because you have chosen a very difficult but rewarding journey. (Later, you may also enjoy the letters of John in the new testiment.)

With love & prayers,

mc^2

I think your question lacks meaning. All human knowledge is derived from the application of the rules of logic, deduction, induction and probability. Truth is an empirical construct, isn’t it? Can’t something have meaning aside from truth?
What assurance do you have that all of your empirical statements are true? You refer me to the aforementioned operators. And what grounds do you have for embracing them? You will probably say “because they work”. Isn’t that the perfect circular argument? And with that response you seem to me to be left with “I believe/I have faith”
So, may it be that every statement is ultimately faith-based? Would our world be so different if that were the case?
Perhaps I have asked a question that can’t be addressed in our language in asking for the grounds of belief in the operators above. If not, is there a metalanguage where we can ask the question legitimately?
I don’t have an answer. I only comment on this conundrum.
