I enjoy watching the show Supernatural. However, sometimes I find it troubling, particularly for it’s portrayal of God and Angels. Is it okay for Catholics to watch this show?
I personally love the show. You just have to remember not to look at it as a possible storyline based on someone’s interpretations of theology, but as a secular fantasy that uses theological elements to tell a story.
I can understand why some might feel uncomfortable watching the show, but I personally like all the stuff they “get wrong” when it comes to their depiction of the spiritual world, because I compare it to what the church teaches and see just how ridiculous and nonsensical the fiction is compared to how perfect and beautiful the Truth is.
It also opens up great opportunities to share the faith, since I have neices, nephews, and other family memeber that watch the show. Whenver the opportunity arises, I always explain how different the show is from Catholic teaching and why. In any other context, trying to share what the church teaches with them is met with apathy and sometimes even agitation. But in the context of talking about Supernatural, the same people find such information to be interesting. Go figure, lol. But at least it’s an opportunity!
It is Television Entertainment… Nothing more…
There are of course people that see evil, non pure Thoughts in just about everything…
except maybe under the bed… have an open mind, its just people reading a script
in front of a camera, trying to entertain… trying to earn a living…
My mother, a not easily offended Conservative Jew, has stopped watching the show. She told me here were story lines and subplots that troubled her and made her uncomfortable. She said in a recent one God has abandoned the world or something.
I’m in the room when my sweet hubby watches it in Netflix sometimes. I feel pretty meh about it. I don’t know if it helps the unbeliever find God.
I’ve seen a few episodes and I think it is an entertaining show for the most part. But some episodes I found disturbing. For example, the one in which one of the brothers falls in love with a woman bitten by a werewolf. The episode ends with them spending a passionate night together after which he kills her, so she doesn’t turn into a werewolf. I thought that was a pretty terrible message about mercy killings.
