First of all, if this should be in the news forum I am fine with it being moved. I put this in this forum because my question is an “is this a sin” type of question rather than a news commentary.
As a caveat, I’m not arguing against and do support Catholic positions on abortion and contraception.
There seems to be a divide in the news stories on whether the elimination of funding for Planned Parenthood is really a sticking point in the US budget debate, but for the purpose of my question let’s assume that it is. Would it be sinful to support the passage of the budget even with PP funding? Personally I’m against the PP funding, but holding up the funding of the Government, the paychecks of hundreds of thousands of workers, etc. over an issue that, while important, is 0.27% of the budget. (Full disclosure: The passage of this directly affects me).
My thinking on this is that it’s a material vs. formal cooperation thing and that it’s fine if I’m just supporting passing a budget vs. supporting passing a budget because it supports PP. Would this be a valid thought process?
