Did you know that there is a physical condition called “congenital erythropoetic porphyia?”

The symptoms are growth of facial hair, red eyes, and red teeth. The skin was affected badly by sunlight, so the victims of this condition avoided daylight.

 I’m serious! This was one of the conditions that gave rise to the myth of the “werewolf.”

I also want to mention that certain criminals in history e.g., Peter Stumpf, were called “werewolves” because of the ferocity of their crimes, which sometimes involved cannabilism of human body parts. I hope that everyone reading this realizes that we’re talking about Lon Chaney/Quentin Collins/Werewolf of London, etc. type werewolves (imaginary!), not these horrible criminals (real).

Don’t worry, I think that everyone knows that we are discussing the imaginary animals.🙂

I’ll tell you a werewolf story that frightened the Bob out of me when I wwas young. I can’t remember the name of the werewolf, but there is a place in France. In the 1700’s there was a series of attacks on young women that were blamed on werewolves. It was probably a seriel killer that was responsible. Does anyone know the story that I am referring to?

Most likely the case of Jean Grenier. Sabine Baring-Gould’s The Book of Were-wolves is a very interesting read 🙂

Zooey, I had another thought: Were-Peeps.

(What they could change into that would be even MORE horrible, I can’t imagine.)

No, I found what I was referring to.The Beast of Gévaudan. Apparently in the middle 1700’s there were several attacks on peasants. No one ever figured out who was killing the people but some people thought a wolf like creature was responsible.

A very loosely and anticatholic movie based on the attacks was made in France, entitled Brotherhood of the Wolf.

There really were mysterious attacks on people during that time, but I think that it was a serial killer

Ah right, that was my second guess but I couldn’t remember the name of the area :o France has a bit of a loup-garou problem, one would think, what with that, Grenier, and Gilles de Rais.

People here are always quick to claim anti-Catholicism in works of fiction. I have to disagree; it’s a fictional Church that usually shares only the name of the actual institution.

Well, yeah, of course. It’s the fictional caricature that constitutes the anti-Catholicism, isn’t it?

But I don’t want to drag the discussion away from were-creatures, who seem to have their own bad press problems.

They change into:bigyikes: Little Tiny Marshmallow Wolves!
No fear, though; I have taken it upon myself to rid the world of Were-Peeps, see:

The movie, Brotherhood of the Wolf, actually was interesting at first. Then it got weird. I think that perhaps the producers had a bias against not just Catholics but Christianity, itself.

It was a silly enough ending that it was almost accidentally funny.

I just warned people against the anticatholicism so if anyone watches it they won’t be offended, but really it’s ending wasn’t smart enough to hurt anyone’s faith.

It was an all right popcorn movie though. Watch the movie if you get a chance to rent it, just be prepared to throw a pillow at the screen when you get to the improbable ending.😛

Pretty much, yeah. It’s good if there’s enough beer around 😉

If werewolves existed, then I wouldn’t be the only one. Hence, there would be werewolf support groups, awareness (wonder what the awareness ribbon color would be?) and probably medication and scientific effort to combat this problem. Or maybe we would all be rounded up by normal humans and put in cages? Who knows.

hi. my name is monica and i’m powerless over my werewolfishness. my life has become unmanageable.

hi monica

so, like, i’m reading this catholic thread and they’re all like “chain yourself up” and “i saw you on dark shadows” and like “i’d go live in the woods with my werewolf family.” and i’m like, don’t you people know this is a disease? that i have a lunar alergy of the body and like, an obsession of the mind? i’m getting a resentment. that’s all i have to say."

thanks for sharing, monica

there’s a peter, paul and mary song about this:

if i were a werewolf
and you were my dinner
wouldja hope i’d be exorcised
would i be a sinner?

i’m fairly certain i added nothing to this scholarly discussion. but i couldn’t help myself.

Suppose you were a werewolf, cursed to changed form once every full moon and stalk and kill human prey. Knowing this, what would you do?
I’d wait until the next full moon, and then hide in the Senate chamber…

Mmmmm…I wonder…if biting someone changes them into a werewolf, then the disease would be transferred through bodily fluids like saliva, blood etc.

I would be trying to pass on the disease to as many people as possible so no one would be endangered. Maybe I would, I don’t know, spit in the water system. Then you would all get a surprise come the full moon.😃

See, deb1, has solved the problem. Yeah, for me.
