It has been put to me that at one time the Church required of women to refrain from entering a church during a period of purification after giving birth. Is this true, something written in canon law, local church customs, an influence from surrounding culture, or a passing of tradition from Old Testament tradition (Mary waiting to present Jesus in the Temple after the time of the Purification)? Any help in finding the answer to this question will help.

This is not correct. The Church did not require women to refrain from entering the church for any period of time.

What you may be referring to is Churching, which is a custom of ancient origin. It is a blessing, not a purification ceremony.
