The Holy Father wore a Roman Chasuble on Ash Wednesday. It was apparently styled after one worn by Paul V, and it was made by Tridentinum. I thought it was beautiful, but that the new pallium looked horrible with it. Here are some pics from the NLM.

Ash Wednesday is supposed to be a fashion show?

Now if the Pope wears an Easter Bonnet, t h a t would be news:D

I guess I wasn’t thinking/  But you must admit, this is way better than those drab gothics the Holy Father has been vested in for over 35 years.

That new pallium is actually the old pallium. It really represents tradition like most other items cannot.

If things don’t look quite right, perhaps adjustments should be considered elswhere?

No, the new pallium is not the “old pallium” It is an anachronistic fabrication, foisted upon the Holy Father by Piero Marini. Nevertheless the Pontiff has seemingly decided to keep it for a time, and perhaps until the end of his pontificate.

Go here: thenewliturgicalmovement.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html for a more in-depth look into why this new pallium is indeed new. Scroll about 1/3 of the way down the page to the post “The Pallium - History and Present Use.” The pins are anachronistic.

For the record, I thought the pallium looked just fine with the chasuble.

And it’s not about a fashion show, it’s about the rediscovery of traditional Catholic vestments befitting a Pope and not a clown. Actually these vestments should and could be employed at a parish level. It’s also a celebration not so much of the form and expense and beauty of the vestments (though that is important), but of what returning to these types of vestments signifies, namely: a greater willingness to be identified with those who throughout the history of our Holy Church have taught the Faith in its fullness instead of the mere secular “social action” homilies one so often hears from his heterodox parish priest.

I never thought I’d see the term anachronistic used here.

By what standard…Paul V?

By the standard of Innocent III the chasuble is anachronistic 😃 so is the mitre, and probably the shoes.

I am not impressed by the argument over the pins, yes of course they serve no practical function but they are hardly worth a post. I think perhaps he could use them like brooch pins to actually hold the thing on. Barring that, just get rid of them, or we can ignore them.

Is it just me? Please forgive me, but to me it is funny to read a blogpost from someone who is ostensibly a traditionalist criticizing something which is supposedly an example of antiquarianism.

To me, Gregory the Great would be the gold standard for Traditional Roman Catholicism, not this 16th century stuff.

I guess I would qualify as an antiquarian myself, and yes, I am something of an anachronism too! 😛

Michael,

I’m not sure I understand why you think the other things are anachronistic?

Anyway, if you wish to be an antiquarian, no one is stopping you from being so! Are you selective in your self-described antiquarianism?
