I was just wondering, is it morally okay to be put to sleep for an operation?

Yes, it is. We are thankful that God has allowed the development of anaesthetic. It’s not like taking unlawful drugs and excess alcohol that impair your judgement, nor are you in danger of doing anything wrong whilst under anaesthetic.

If you were conscious during surgery and twitching and trembling in terrible pain, tensing against the knife, it would be very difficult for the medical staff to do their jobs, and for the surgeon to do his delicate work, and might foolishly endanger your survival.

In my humble opinion, and I think that others would agree with me, it would be a sin to not undergo anesthesia for a surgery for which it is normally recommended/required. There would be many more risks as well as undergoing complete unnecessary and avoidable pain.

i just thought since it impaired my judgement it might not be okay, but it seemed fine. just wanted to make sure. 🙂

please pray for me, my surgery is tomorrow:o

Egad! I think it would be most immoral to NOT be put to sleep for an operation! Wouldn’t that be considered torture??

I also pray your surgery goes well… Have you been anointed? It is permisable for someone who is getting ready to undergo surgery (especially if they are being put under anesthesia) to be anointed. I was anointed two months ago for a (relatively) simple 30 minute knee surgery. When I have my other one operated on, I will be anointed again.

Depending on what time your surgery is tomorrow (now, technically today), you could stop by a parish and ask to be anointed if you haven’t done so.

One last note on drugs and medications that impair your judgement… I don’t know what kind (if any) of pain medication your doctor might put you on following the surgery, but if you are using any medication as prescribed by a doctor, and it does happen to impair your judgement, it is not sinful. It would only become sinful if you were to try to operate a vehicle or other equiptment that requires all of your judgement… ie, don’t do anything that would put you or anyone else at risk.

Again, many prayers for your successful surgery and quick recovery!!

God Bless!
Ericka
