Surgery on All Saints Day-A sin to miss Mass?

A couple of weeks ago I scheduled a surgical procedure for November 1st. It wasn’t until last night (Saturday) that I remembered that November 1st is All Saints Day. Would it be a sin for me to miss this Holy Day of Obligation under the circumstances. I thought of going to a Mass before my arrival at the Hospital, but am unable to eat or drink before the surgery, so I would not be able to go to Communion. I am also unable to go to a Vigil the night before because I work until 7 pm.

Would it be a mortal sin if I did not go?

Well, if you can make it before the surgery, then go. Just don’t receive the blessed Sacrament, to keep your surgical fast. We are only required to receive communion once a year. If you can’t go, due to the surgery, then don’t go. I’ll bet God will understand.

Of all the reasons people give for missing a day of obligation, I’d say a surgery is 100% OK.

I’ll pray for a good result from your surgery.

There is no obligation to receive communion on All Saints day, or any other individual day (except for the day of your decedency, if you are offered viaticum).

Before the current era, it was very uncommon for Catholics to be expected to recieve communion each and every week, and very few (even now-canonized saints) did.

Interesting. I hadn’t known this. It will be hard not to receive though, given that it will be available in this case.

If you cannot make it to Mass, don’t worry about it. You are not willfully skipping Mass to be defiant.

Thank you for the prayers. I made it through the surgery and am now hoping to survive the recovery period!

Incidentally, despite my desire to attend Mass on All Saints Day I did not feel up to going physically. I checked EWTN and they were airing a Mass celebrated by Father Francis Mary so I was able to participate in this way and make a Spiritual Communion.

i guess we must remember that Jesus Christ said that it is not unlawful to cure in sabbath day, so i think it is not a sin to be cured on the holy days.
