I was wondering if anyone ever read this books? I presonally love them. There are like 11 books now of people who found the Catholic Church

There are several sequels to this book. I own and have read the volume known as “Surprised By Truth 2”

Hi PattyP: I have read Surprised by Truth 1, 2, and 3. I don’t think there are any more. The 11 comes from the subtitle to the first book:
Surprised by Truth: 11 Converts Give the Biblical and Historical Reasons for Becoming Catholic.

They really encouraged me during my conversion. I would recommend them to anyone.
 
Back around 2000, I ordered a book from a large online bookseller that related to my religious interest at the time, which was paganism. Whoever fulfilled my order at the warehouse decided to send me Volume One of this series instead of the book I ordered. (No, I don’t think it was a simple mistake.) I was pissed off and I put in a complaint and got the book I originally wanted, but I never got rid of the Surprised By Truth book, either. I read it recently. It’s interesting, but the conversion stories are nearly all of people coming from various conservative or evangelical Protestant backgrounds. It would not have done me much good even had I read it back when I first received it because there was nothing in it speaking to people from the kind of background I came from.

actually if you continue to read the others it has differnt ones too. I know in # 3 they had a Mormon and a JW so may be there were pagans too

Also I think there are 11 cuz I order a bunch from my libabry once and got like #4 and #5 but again I could be wrong 🙂

Yes, I know later ones have different perspectives.

I’m not knockin’ the series at all. In fact there are a couple of people I can think of to whom I might want to pass on my copy of #1.

Have you found anything that addresses your kind of conversion?

For me, a Catholic who went astray as a teenager and married into the pentecostal preacher’s family, and subsequently divorced,
the Surprised by Truth books were a Godsend. In them I found new “friends.” Kindred spirits who had walked the road I was currently on from evangelical to Catholic.

There is a lot of loss connected with my kind of conversion. So many former friends (who I still love and hold dear) think I’ve lost my faith, and have bought into a lie.

I believe I was wrong there are only 3 books 🙂 I just didn’t remember sinve I read them so long ago:thumbsup:

Trying to convert people- now thats what I call “pure deconstructionism”. even jesus said he came not with peace but with the sword. missionaries are deconstructors of peace. yeah? :cool:

There was one conversion story in the second book which is somewhat similar to mine, but other than that, no. My religious background is extremely weird. Maybe someday I’ll type it all up and share my conversion story with anyone out there who might be like me.
 
I was surprised by the truth one time when I started to study the Bible and found out how wrong catholic doctrine is. will tell you my conversion story sometime
