As an experiment, I got on a “Christian” forum about a month ago, lurked for a while, then openly started posting as a Catholic.

Purposefully, I kept my comments generic and avoided responding to any posts directed at Catholicism, mostly asking questions of clarification i.e. when someone claimed that such-and-such was biblical, I’d ask where. Or I started a thread about Lutheran understanding of the “real Presense” in the eucharist.

Talk about painting on a target!

In nearly every thread someone would say, “blah, blah blah, not like those Catholics that…blah, blah, blah”. Or my questions would be met with something like “I’m not falling for your Catholic baiting, you Catholics are trained to bait others with stupid questions to try to trick people”.

I must missed that part of Catechism, “Baiting other people on internet forums”.

Anyway, this is not to condemn every Christian internet forum out there, but was a learning experinece in just how vehement some folks can be in their Anti-Catholocism…and I’m not one who knee-jerks when our Catholic beliefs are questioned or criticized.

But Holy Cow! Being told repeatedly that Catholics aren’t Christians, we don’t worship the same Jesus, etc. etc. was at times rather shocking but at the same time, I must admit, very demonstrative at how emotion frequently trumps intellect.

I can’t tell you how many times the moderators would pile on, quoting non-existing scripture generically “The bible says that…”, ignoring what scripture says “the bible doesn’t say anything about that” not to mention the almost-comical-if-I-didn’t-know-they-were-serious-about-it interpretations of scriptural verses.

I had asked a question about where the folks on the forum go when they run across a difficult piece of scripture; their Pastor?, a bible commentary? A favorite biblical theologian? The answers that I got were pretty much all the same, arrogantly stating that scripture was easy and that if one just studied it, they would understand it and that they would never need anyone to help interpret for them.

I then made the observation that while they felt that was true, good for them, that in some way they had to depend on a translator unless they had an understanding of greek and Hebrew and knew the languages well enough to understand the nuances. The answer was many times a slam on that “RCC ****” and avoidance of answering.

Sigh…I’m exhausted. Charitably, I can’t chalk it up to stupidity although that certainly is a factor, but my experience taught me somthing valuable of how some “Christians” veiw themselves and Catholics.

It’s disappointing, but I take comfort that one of my best friends is a Lutheran minister. 🙂

Sounds like a group of extreme fundalmentalist. I like their blah blah blah arugment. You can’t really argue with it unless you say tsk tsk tsk.😃

Do you think the official Roman Catholic gospel is different than the gospel proclaimed by the Protestant Reformers? Consider the sacred tradition of the Council of Trent before answering.

Looking forward to this exchange…esp. with the
Council of Trent being referenced. http://bestsmileys.com/eating1/16.gif

I have to say that I don’t know how one can ignore
the argument vis a vis the Keys and Peter.

If apostolic succession was in place for 1500 years, prior to
Luther, how are the Keys seen - in 2008?

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

It seems to me that there is no way round the Keys,
nor apostolic succession.

Personally, I don’t find it too surprising, for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I’ve had a variety of experiences with a variety of Protestants.

For another, I’ve seen some pretty strong anti-Protestant rhetoric coming from a number of posters on this forum, so common sense would seem to suggest that there would be Protestants out there who are just as bad in their treatment of Catholics.

I think the Apostle Paul was not a man pleaser, but rather he was a God pleaser.

Galatians 1:10

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Paul Opposes Peter
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. 13 And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Justified by Faith
15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified [1] by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.

17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we too were found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness [2] were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. - Gal 2

Matthew 22:36-40
"“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

What about the Council of Trent? I assume that you have a point
to make, which includes that Council.

Am I to take this to mean that those people were comparing Lutherans to Catholics? 😃

YES, of course! 👍 I am guessing you don’t?

Extract from the Council of Trent:

“Furthermore, in order to restrain petulant spirits, It decrees, that no one, relying on his own skill, shall,–in matters of faith, and of morals pertaining to the edification of Christian doctrine, –wresting the sacred Scripture to his own senses, presume to interpret the said sacred Scripture contrary to that sense which holy mother Church,–whose it is to judge of the true sense and interpretation of the holy Scriptures,–hath held and doth hold; [Page 20] or even contrary to the unanimous consent of the Fathers; even though such interpretations were never (intended) to be at any time published. Contraveners shall be made known by their Ordinaries, and be punished with the penalties by law established.” pp. 19-20**

Hey buddy
Poster Reformed found the quote that actually explains how I feel about offending Protestants:
"For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. "Galatians 1:10

You float around and sometimes have a valid point.👍 Did you notice I said sometimes? On other Threads you say something ~ I respond and you never do!🤷

I know you don’t like talking to me! SOB!!:crying: If you only know what that harsh remark meant to me! I may never recover from the shame, the insult, the laughter :rotfl: !

I mean, if I didn’t have you to guide me where would I be? :extrahappy: **
**Joke Time: This thread need a little humor, sorry PeterJ It really does!

It was during the gold rush in the Yukon Territory. Peter J
packed a bag, grabbed his Bible, and started out of the tent he
shared with Rob Gentner.
Rob asked, “Where are you going, Peter?”
“I’m heading into Fort Dawson. I hear it’s the wildest town
anybody’s ever seen. There’s booze you could take a bath in,
gambling, and women who’ll drive you crazy with their favors.”
“Why are you taking your Bible?”
“Well, if it’s as good as they say, I’m planning to stay over Sunday!”

OK, I have a confession. I changed the names. PeterJ doesn’t have that much of a sense of humor. He could never say something that funny!

But I still Love  him!

God Bless

OP, I’ve been there, done that. All I can tell you is that there are sometimes voices of reason on those boards but they get bullied and drowned out by the loudmouths. Probably some members were reading along feeling bad for you but were afraid to say anything — when they do defend a Catholic, they get told they’ve “betrayed the Reformation” or “given in to false doctrine.” 😦

Great point and a very valid one as well!

oh, boy. I think there are many of us who have visited those sites. Lack of charity to non-Protestants seems to be the common denominator there. Personally, I avoid them now as my blood pressure spikes when visiting those sites.

Kind of like the hatred spewed at many Protestants here I’m sure.

SIA He asks a question and make a statement and you think that is a great and valid point.😃 You read minds now?🤷 Ops, I shouldn’t have thought what I just did, if you can! I apologize just in case you can! 🙂 **

Yup. I’m too old, or too responsible, or possibly too crazy, for those boards now. When internet strangers got me so worked up that I started snapping at my kids, then I knew it was time to quit.

No need for mind reading. The sham that the Council of Trent was speaks for itself. The poster was merely making a reference that was very obvious. That’s all.🙂

In truth my friend…some of what you see “hurled” at Catholics on some of those sites would embarrass you mightily. Trust me when I say that nothing said by a Catholic here has ever come close to what I have seen on a couple of “those” sites…😦 It is hard for me to even begin to fathom how some of those people can even begin to think they are “Christians”…😦

I don’t bother with them anymore… I’d probably enjoy pulling my own teeth with rusty pliers more…and no novacaine…

I absolutely do not condone any of it. The ignorance of many of those so called died in the wool fundamentalists is sickening I know. But the way Protestants in general are said to be constantly ignorant of the Catholic faith and the only reason why they are not Catholic is bogus as well. True in some instances but certainly not all.
