Surrender?

How do we surrender our wills to God in a real everyday way? Any examples, or references would be greatly appreciated.

The old prayer says it well. God grant me the grace to change what I can change, to accept what I can’t change and the wisdom to know the difference. To accept what you can’t change is surrender.

one answer to your question is that it’s different for each person, each day. i mean, what they’ve said thus far is true. but when it comes to the everyday grind, my submitting my life to God’s will is a matter of accepting what He sends me today, whatever it is, and being loving and kind and humble, rather than rejecting it in pride and saying ‘i won’t do THAT.’

it’s a lifestyle, a learning to accept things that we would not ordinarily do. for me, it’s meant taking jobs that i don’t consider worthy of my abilities. it’s meant being friends with people i don’t like. it’s meant getting up at horrible hours of the morning because someone needs my help.

Forming my conscience in line with Christ’s teachings and praying would be my answer.

How do you come to understand God’s will in your life?

First, you must listen to God. See my meditation “Listening to God”

Then you must discern what he heard and verify that it is of God.

It takes a lot of prayer and openness to God’s will. We are not called to understand the “why” of God’s will, rather the “what” of God’s will. In many cases we have to accept on faith that God knows best for us and those around us. Often the “what” is only the what that applies to us directly. We often will not know what God’s will is for other people around us, even when our “what” interacts with their “what” from God.

Pray each day, to love God more each day. He will grant this prayer. As you grow in love, you grow in trust and openness to God and can surrender easier and better.

Our Blessed Mother Mary, at the Annunciation was so completely surrendered to God’s will her first thought, was how?..not why?

Christ Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane was deeply perturbed in His very spirit as He knew what would happen to Him, but He too although was afraid, confirmed to Our Father, that His will be done. In the Lord’s Prayer this is the ultimate prayer of petition, glorification, but clearly ‘Thy will be done’.

Surrender to the Father’s will is indeed surrender to the very will that has at it’s very core our best interests. We think we know what is good for us, we think we can make the best laws for oursleves but we can’t, the Father’s will is for the good of ourselves, humanity, the world, heaven and ultimately for God Himself.

Now that qualifies as the $.50 question in a $.10 conversation!

1. pay attention. Meaning, quiet down, quit seeking whatever you want, and pay attention to what you are getting. God may have a plan for your life; given that I believe in free will, I would rather say plans, as the choices we make exclude other options. If you choose to marry Bill, Bob is no longer an option (unless you are a starlet…).
2. pray for guidance. Not results, guidance.
3. test what comes your way. If it seems too good to be true, it just may be… You need to be aware of who you really are. For example, if you really, really can’t stand a mess, you might want to reconsider marrying Bill if he is ADHD; he may be really spontaneous and a lot of fun, but everything he starts is going to be half finished, and mess won’t describe what it will look like…
4. allow God to work in his own time and in his own way. Moses got a burning bush. As best I can recall, out of all the other individuals in the Old and New Testament, he was the only one…
5. take the time to look back on where you have been. Not just yesterday, at the mall, or last week, at work… And reflect on it. There are messages there, if you will listen; but for thatf, see rule 1) above…
6. reflect on the words of John Paul 2; there are no coincidences with God…
7. realize that some of what is happening to you is a consequence of your own choices. Responsibility is a big word. God isn’t going to bail you out of every stupid decision you make, either by choice, or by not making a choice…
8. at the end of it all, go back to rule 2).

I find that the way of many saints is by self denial. this day I could have my drink cold instead of hot, cold shower instead of hot, shave without cream etc.
