Surrogate motherhood

I am a surrogate carrying a baby (not genetically mine) for my sister. I am not doing it for money, I am doing it for love. She is a cancer survivor (30 years) and cannot carry a child because of the effects from radiation and chemo. I am Catholic. I’ve heard all sides of the issue with regard to my faith. Ultimately, I believe that Jesus’ teaching of “love one another” applies.

Sure there are all kinds of legalistic prohibitions against this – but I agree that love trumps all, and you’re giving all of your love in a very profound way.

I bore a child (my own) who was adopted by friends (a childless couple) years ago. It’s difficult to say goodbye to the baby but it’s not impossible, and I’m positive you will receive so much in return. I wish you the best through your pregnancy, delivery and the rest of your shared lives.

While your intentions are surely laudable, the action itself is not. Your sister’s desire for a child of her own is wonderful, but unfortunately it is not acceptable to bring a child into the world without the direct unitive and procreative power of the marital act. Children are wonderful gifts, but we must be prudent in discerning the will of God, especially when that will has been explicated by His Church. In this case, the Church in her wisdom has taught that surrogate motherhood is morally unacceptable.
