I’m doing a survey for an essay in my world religions class. The subject of the survey is how members of the Catholic church view the LGBT community based on their religious views. I think you need to clarify question #4. What do you mean by “support?” Do you mean support gay marriage?; support them as human beings?; support them as Catholics? or what, exactly. Definitions matter and I’m sure your instructor would want you to be specific. Also, 4 questions don’t seem like enough to come to any conclusions. You need more than that. Again, I think you instructor will want more for statistical analysis. I suggest you talk to him/her about it.

Shouldn’t an essay for a world religion class be dealing in facts rather than opinions? If you are studying world religions, I would hope you are studying what the religions teach about various topics, not what random people on the internet think about them.

Practice can be quite distinct from teaching for any religion. If I wanted to know what X religion taught about a subject I would want to know what their religious texts had to say about the subject as well as what people who identify with that religion actucally believe.

Respectfully, an opinion poll taken by a known polling organization may be more useful, but if the information you find does not cover what you want to know, I don’t think a poll from random people on the internet would be useful.

In other words, professional polls by established companies use careful wording and poll a large enough number of people to get enough of a response to be useful. As others have mentioned, the questions need to be more carefully/specifically worded.

Also: something for clarification that I think is important. In your survey you asked people to give scriptural support for their positions. Perhaps you don’t know this, but Catholics don’t rely on JUST scripture. In fact, no where in the bible does it say “just get your information from the bible” The Catholic church bases her teachings on Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition equally.

This may seem trivial, but if you want information for why Catholics believe what they believe, you would need to be open to information based on Sacred Tradition as well since that is a huge part of Catholic teaching and not just Scripture. Agreed. I can not adequately answer the question of ‘why’ without linking into Sacred Tradition. Scripture supports our view but it only provides part of the picture.
