“And behold! Allah will say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, ‘Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah?” He will say: “Glory to Thee! Never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.” Holy Qur’an 5:116

Do you believe that Mary is God?

Is there anywhere in Catholic History where it was believed that Mary is God?

Why are you quoting the Quran and asking Catholics if they believe the Blessed Virgin is God in the same post?

Since you were once Catholic, I assume you remember that the Church does not teach that Mary is God.

Of course, the Church has never taught that Mary is God.

But the Quran misunderstands Church teaching, and so tries to correct a teaching that was never taught.

Perhaps he is trying to make a point by taking a survey of our beliefs. So put me down for a no. Mary is not God.

I hope it is not a survey for the ezboards King James Bible Only forums where I first encountered him. I would not like to see our responses used on a vitriolic anti-Catholic board like that.

Forgive me if I am wrong but I am a little inquisitive as to why you would ask such a question. I can guarantee that you will find absolutely NO Catholic on the face of the planet, with even the most basic knowledge of Catholic doctrine, who will say that Mary is God. Anyone who does is guilty of heresy, and the Church will very quickly, emphatically, and comprehensively say as much.

No Mary is not God, but Jesus is. And yes Jesus did proclaim it, when He affirmed what Simon (Peter) had said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” and Jesus affirmed it by saying “no mere man hath revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven.”

No to both of your questions.

In the early church there was a group called the Collyridians who worshiped Mary and made her equivalent to God. Since Collyridianism stood alone as a heresy that sought to deify the Blessed Virgin Mary, the members were excommunicated from the church.

People will say we worship Mary, but they simply do not understand. Mary is not equivalent to God. Giving someone honor versus worshiping someone are two distinct things.

No Mary is not God, it is not and has never been taught. Does anyone else think this is a passive aggressive post meant to insult Catholic’s and minimize us?

No she is not - it’s a horrible idea.

There has been a lot of incautious language which could certainly give that impression - but no, she is not a god.

God is unique anyway - there could not be more than one, because that would mean that the Divine Being is not God, but a god - and there is a vast different between being God, and being a god.

I don’t think this is an insulting question; I think it’s a reasonable one, and I don’t for a moment believe it is ill-intended ##

Mary is not God
Jesus is God

Mother Mary is a sinless “creation”
Jesus is the Creator

Nowhere is it stated, then or now, that Mary is God. It’s not taught, ever.

No, I do not believe Mary is God.

No, nowhere in history did the Catholic Church teach or believe that Mary was God.

Survey: The sky is blue. Yes or No?

I think you’d have better luck getting different answers with my question.

No, Mary is not God, she is a created being - we don’t look to her for our salvation. Jesus was not created however.

Yes, so Muhammad was trying to correct what he saw as a Christian belief when it was a heretical belief. I can’t take someone like Muhammad seriously when he can’t even get Christian beliefs correct.

Mary is not God nor is she god (with a little ‘g’).

Mary is the Mother of God (Theotakos). Elizabeth asked “How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me?”

On another post you remarked upon the belief that Mary’s body was not left to corruption like that was a novel idea. Scripture tells us that Elijah was taken in a flaming chariot to heaven and Enoch who “walked with God all the days of his life” di not die but was assumed directly into heaven. The church does not say whether Mary died or did not die but holds that at the end of her time on earth, she was assumed (ie not by her own power but by the power of God; different from Jesus, who ascended by his own power) into heaven before her body was able to decay. Mary’s assumption is not unigue in Scripture, but it does place her in good company.

Mary always points the way to Jesus

YEAH ME! 👍 Its a waste of time trying to convince non-catholics otherwise. No matter what you say or what you do, Catholics will ALWAYS worship Mary and consider (???this is new) her God  She is the mother of my Lord and I adore her and thats that, I dont need to explain it any further, because Daniel knows the answer!
