"Survivor" Question

However, I was thinking that, if one was on the show for an extended period of time, one would be forced to miss mass for an extended period of time (up to 39 days)… so my question is, do you think that it would be sinful to participate in this show, knowing that you could possibly miss mass about 5 straight Sundays? I have no clue lol

You would most definitely miss Mass for several weeks, and yes, that would be a mortal sin in my understanding.

I don’t think so- I mean, by this logic going on a mission to Mars, which would force you to miss mass for 18 months or so, would be extra mortally sinful. The same would be true in to a lesser extent for just about everything else an astronaut would be doing in space.

Catholics ARE permitted to travel for lengthy periods of time, even when such travel means they are going to places (say the Gobi desert) where they know they’ll miss Mass.

Heck, you can even choose to LIVE permanently in a remote area (such as the Gobi desert), even knowing that this means you won’t have easy access to the Sacraments. It is no sin to do so.

If you plan to do something like go on Survivor, however, it’s a good idea to talk to your priest about it beforehand. He can dispense you from the Mass obligation for the time you are travelling. To my understanding it isn’t strictly necessary, but it means you can be that little bit more secure that you’re OK to miss Mass.

That’s how I’ve always understood it. The CAF apologists have answered this question before in pretty much the same way.

Why the confusion? Of course if you’re a doctor or firefighter or whatnot you sometimes have to work Sundays - illnesses and fires happen 24/7 after all. Same goes if, say, you’re in charge of a power plant - people need electricity 24/7 too, so the occasional Sunday might be called for. So yes, in such cases it’s fine to miss Mass.
