"Survivor" TV show

Been watching “Survivor” on and off for a number of years.

Noticed that they seem to be unable to start fire on their own. (The first group to “self-start” fire achieved their success just a couple of weeks ago.)

There is another TV survivor program, “Survivorman”, in which a fellow strands himself in hostile places and always gets a fire started in a few minutes.

I also noticed that the current group of “Survivor” contestants seem to be unable to improvise fish-catching gear.

Anyway I was wondering if any posters had any insights into why the “Survivor” contestants are genrally unable to start fire or catch fish.

Probably never had to do it before. If it were me, and I knew I was going on the show, I would practice firestarting before.

I think Survivor is heavily influenced by the networks. They need to make the show interesting.

What I should do is some “controlled experiments” … making fire in my back yard with a bow and a couple of pieces of wood. Seems to me that when I was in Boy Scouts, the bow method was successfully demonstrated to us.

On the TV show “Mythbusters”, they tried a wide variety of fire starting techniques, such as the bow, the use of a shotgun, magnifying glass, etc. And they were totally unsuccessful with all of them. So, the “myth” was busted as far as they were concerned. I thought that perhaps they rigged their experiments to fail, so as to prevent every ten-year old in the country from burning down their parents’ homes.

But “Survivorman” used each and every technique to make fire without much difficulty.

You are probably right. I have wondered how much they pay the basic non-winning contestants … to compensate for the time away from work, and to keep their mouths shut.

It’s a huge production enterprise. On some preview or other, Jeff gave a tour of the “town” they built for the field crew … must have been 200 people that had to be housed and taken care of.

On a similar note…

My wife and I haven’t watched it for about 2 years. But talking of fire, I remember one of the Survivors where it was the girls against the guys. I don’t recall all of the tools they had for making fire but they had these lamps, kerosene lamps maybe? Well the guys got the fire lit the first night and it took the ladies several nights. I had a good laugh at that and said to my wife, guys have been throwing gas on fires since they were 5 so they knew right away what to do!

I know they get a lump sum, if they don’t win, a couple of grand. They also get sent away to sequesterville, which is generally a beautiful large villa like place where all of their needs are met, food,water, entertainment etc that they aren’t allowed to leave until shooting is over. On a show like Survivor, I would think that heading to sequesterville is a very lovely option.

You can go on CBS.com and look at the Amazing race page… they show video of each team as they arrive to what is termed “Elimination Station” It looks pretty nice to me!, Almost worth not winning the Race

Sometimes it seems that Survivor “contestants” who are “go-getters” get voted off early. That may be one reason why a lot of folks don’t seem to want to be seen as making a substantive effort.

I need to ask a question: Do you all believe that ‘Survivor’ is a good show to watch? I find it anti-christian because it is a show where friendships are abused through deceit and lying. I see nothing redeeming in that show, and look upon it as one aspect of the media that devalues human relationships by turning such relationships into objects for gain.

Fire or no fire…it is becoming the sign of the times.

In my opinion, there are a LOT of “ethical” or at least “semi-ethical” issues.

Folks who display leadership qualities tend to be voted off early. One exception was Tom the fireman from Boston.

Successful food gatherers tend to get voted off early. One exception was Rupert, the bearded fellow who actually wrestled a small shark barehanded.

Winners tended, generally, to “fly under the radar”, maintain a low profile for as long as possible.

That would generally mean the program follows a “Socialist” model. Entrepreneurs get punished. Bureaucrats and such get rewarded.

Anyway, that’s where my stream-of-consciousness typing has led me.

Personally I enjoy the show. I think all of us who watch it wish we could be so lucky. And I would venture to say, we would be just as “thoughtful” in how we might go about winning.

I once worked at a large 100-year-old company that had grown and prospered; multiple generations of employees; survived thick and thin.

For some bizarre reason, they one day took on the “Survivor” TV show mentality. Within two years, the company had to declare bankruptcy.

Starting fire is a skill, much like piloting a plane or defusing a bomb. You don’t expect someone who’s never flown a plane before to be able to hop into a cockpit and get it right their first time with no practice, do you?

There used to be another show called “Brat Camp” where fire-starting was one of the tasks the troubled youths needed to master as part of their program. It took them weeks to get it.

There was one woman who claimed to be a christian and was very forward with her christianity. I believe she ended up winning the million. But the thing I remember most about her was when they do the little exclusive things, she made a comment in reference to the lieing and backstabbing that she was doing - that all she had to do was ask God for forgiveness.

'course I don’t know that Survivor goes out of its way to make Christians look bad, but boy did that make me angry. 1) that a Christian would take that attitude and 2) that they’d show it (less though #2)

I agree. With all the controls etc. most of the time planes practically fly themselves once they’re up. But not everybody can take off safely and land safely, all by him or herself, on his/her very first attempt!

Yes, you are right. But is it christian to go about it the way the contestants go about winning the million? I don’t think so. The Survivor show is just one of many shows that tend to subvert good wholesome value structures and lead us further from the meaning of Christ. To love your neighbor and show charity.

What message does this show give our youth? Make friends not out of loyality but for one’s own gain. Not a good message, if true.
