Pax Christi!

Yes: the 1931 classic! Boris Karloff!

We’ve seen it a bunch! We love it a bunch!

You gonna watch it with me? 10 p.m. Eastern!

God bless!

Can’t watch it tonight–have to be at work at 5:30 a.m.

I’m planning to watch it Sunday evening–I have Monday off!

One of the best movies ever!

I so miss Svengoolie! Lost him when we did away with digital cable. Looks like digital will once again be the cheaper option for us – can’t wait to get my Svengoolie fix! 🙂

Enjoy the flick. What a classic.

“It’s ALIVE!!!”
That movie scared the daylights out of me when I was little.

Hi svid2,

I will be watching. 🙂

I think that I mentioned that we get some Chicago channels regionally, on our digital TV through our indoor TV antenna, so we will be watching. I love to watch these old horror classics.

Will it be the original, or the one with the scene cut of the monster throwing the little girl in the lake? The original is rarely seen.
I’ve seen the original with the scene. When I said original, I meant not any of the not worthy remakes.

What’s Svengoolie?

He’s the best! He’s been around since I was a teenager (a different person played him). Wonderful old movies and wonderful comedy “schtick,” as well as genuinely interesting commentary on the movies, actors, etc.

Appropriate for most children. A great family activity.

And for those of us who live in the Chicago area, he’s a beloved tradition! BERWYN!!!

Is he kind of like Mystery Science Theater 3000?

That’s right, Cat! Berrrwyynn!! 😃 😛 That always made me laugh, and still does. And, I like Berwyn, and always did. It’s a nice place! 🙂

Hi DlandFan,

Yes, I guess you could say that it was a similar kind of concept. 🙂

Those of us in the Chicago area or who pick up the Chicagoland TV feeds–like I do up here in Wisconsin on my TV–get to see Svengoolie on Saturday nights.

I am going to jump on in here and say that it sounds to me that probably every regional location had some kind of weekend version going on of some kind of horror movie host, either like Mystery Science Theater, or Svengoolie.

I love Mystery Science Theater, too.

The difference is that Mystery Science Theater has really bad (stupid) horror movies and sci-fi movies, and the human and the two robots make fun of the movie all the way through the movie. It’s hilarious–I have several DVDs of the show.

Svengoolie shows really GOOD horror and sci-fi movies, and he doesn’t make fun of them. Quite the opposite–he gives all kinds of interesting information about the movies, actors, writers, directors, and other trivia. He really helps you to experience the movie the way it was experienced back when it first came out. He has reverence for the old movies.

He makes his jokes in-between scenes, not during the movie. And he doesn’t just make jokes. He sings satirical songs about the movie, or does skits, or has products (I love the “Ghoster Strudel” a few weeks ago–my husband and I were rolling on the floor over that skit!). And he has sidekicks on the show, most notably a rubber chicken named “Kerwyn.” They play off each other, kind of like Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon.

The jokes on the show keep up with current times and events; e.g., the Ghoster Strudel skit satirized a very popular ad campaign for “Toaster Strudel” featuring a very German-looking little boy named “Hans Strudel.” Svengoolie looked hilarious in his lederhosen.

Often he has serious guests on his show: actors, writers, make-up artists, etc.

He also keeps us updated about his activities at various fan conventions around the country. Svengoolie is a popular guest at these events.

I’m not quite sure when the Berwyn joke got started, but it’s been there as long as we remember Svengoolie (back in the 1970s.). I think it has something to do with the fact that Berwyn is a very old Chicago suburb where all the houses look alike and a lot of working-class people live. Not a very glamorous place to grow up, and easy to make fun of (kind of like Peoria, Illinois). The name is “funny-sounding,” too, especially when Chicago-born and bred Midwesterners pronounce it.

The show is done in a tasteful way–no nasty words, overt sexual jokes, etc. Like I said, it’s appropriate for most children (really sensitive children who are afraid of monsters, ghosts, etc. would not like Svengoolie or anything else to do with horror movies). The target age is older children and young teenagers, but lots of us “grown up kids” love the show, too. The character of Svengoolie is charming and funny, and he makes you feel like you’re his very closest friend, like you’re right on the set with him, having a relaxing fun evening. We just love this show and always have.

I watched the show all the time in the early '80s. The Berwyn thing got started during the part where they would read viewer mail. Svengoolie would introduce the letter by reading the name of the writer, and the city they are from. After he said the city name you would always hear voices in the background repeat the name with the same rhythm used to say “Berwyn”. I guess something about the way the name “Berwyn” sounded was funny, and that became a running gag.

Thanks, that’s cool.

Yes, when “Berwyn” is pronounced by Chicago-Midwesterners (or even non-Chicago Midwesterners like me), it really sounds funny! Right through the nose.

I can’t imagine “Berwyn” sounding funny pronounced by Southerners, or by New Englanders!

To get an idea of how Chicago Midwesterners sound, try to find some of the old “Super Fans” skits from Saturday Night Live. “Da Bears.” The accents are perfect.

Speaking as one who grew up on the South Side (or should I say Sout’side) of Chicago, I do think the Super Fans’ accents are just a bit exaggerated.
With regard to Berwyn, I lived there for almost 10 years. It used to be heavily populated by people of Czech and Polish ancestry. The town holds a yearly festival in honor of mushrooms–the Houby Festival. It’s also noted for its big, brick bungalows. Go to YouTube and search for the Svengoolie video Bye Bye Berwyn.
