Don’t remember it as I wasn’t born then, but have certainly heard enough about it.
One big difference for me: I have already heard of two deaths from this swine flu, two degrees of seperation from me (i.e., friends-of-friends who died). That’s half as many people as I know within two degrees of seperation as have died in car accidents. Both were pregnant women with children, much like myself, in otherwise good health (so if I include the children, that’s equal to the number of people dead in car accidents two degrees out). Clearly this is not just some anonymous threat, but something which is really killing people in my home state. In addition to these deaths are numerous reports of two-degrees-removed hospitalizations. Again, no one I know personally, but still too close for comfort.
Furthermore, I have evidence and statistics from the government that make it clear that this situation is very different from the 1970’s swine flu in quantity of hospitalizations and deaths, plus I have strong anecdotal evidence that it is a real threat in my own community. Also, the process of creating the swine flu vaccine this year is the same process used for the seasonal flu vaccine every year and very well-tested. The clincher, however, is that 98% of the flus being tested right now are H1N1, the swine flu. I have decided that I will get the H1N1 vaccine, but not the seasonal flu vaccine at this point. I may get the seasonal flu vaccine at a later date, but will make that decision later when the seasonal flu season gets closer (December through May, I believe).
The one caveat: Washington state at least is suspending the normal limits on mercury contents of vaccines (themerisol, anecdotally but not empirically linked to autism, which runs in my family pretty heavily). I don’t know if other states are doing this. I will only get the vaccine if I can get a mercury-free vaccination.
