Symbol of Mary?

I have seen the symbol of a M intertwined with a A I’m under the impression this is a Marian symbol but I don’t know what its supposed to mean does anyone know?

It stands for Auspice Maria (Latin for “Under the Protection of Mary”).

I always assumed it meant “Ave Maria.” Anybody have the appropriate documentation?

If the A and M are intertwined like this:

then it definitely means “Auspice Maria” (and this is a *very *old symbol). I assumed the image you posted was simply a more “stylized” version of this same symbol.

Of course, since they are symbols, they can mean pretty much whatever we want them to mean (and the meaning can change dramatically over time). The swastika is a perfect example of how a symbol can have multiple origins and meanings.
