This classic Eastern Christian theme commemorates the Virgin’s appearance at Constantinople in the tenth century, in which she took off her shining veil and held it out over the people in the church, symbolizing her protection of all Christians.

Ah, totally hadn’t known; was just looking for the original source of the image. Did a Google search on their background… that’s a whole lot of weird. :confused:

It’s a variation of the Panagia icon. I think it’s customary in icons of the Theotokos to have Christ with her.

Monastery Icons has icons that veer from tradition.
