I guess the pontiff has called for a synod in 2015 for something to do with the family. Is a synod like an ecumenical council? He’s calling together the bishops for some purpose. I guess too he has just re-appointed Carl Anderson as Supreme Knight of the KofC. But what is this synod supposed to accomplish some new doctrine or something?

A Synod is like an Ecumenical Council but is not universal i.e. only certain Bishops are invited to attend sometimes they are led by the Pope others by an Archbishop and his Bishops or by a Bishop and his clergy.

Also: The Supreme Knight of the KofC is not appointed by the holy father, but is elected/appointed by the KofC Board of Directors, I believe.

SK Carl Anderson does sit on a pontifical commission or two (including the Commission on Family, I think), at the invitation of the holy father. Perhaps he has been re-appointed to one of these?

I just read from this month’s “Columbia” that Carl Anderson was appointed to a 5 year position. I know he is the only lay person I heard “appointed” by the pope. If not he’s the only laity on some council that is not ecclesiastic in nature.

Ah, got it.
Pope Francis Reappoints Supreme Knight to Pontifical Council
POPE FRANCIS On Feb. 7 reappointed Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson to the Pontifical Council for the Laity for a five-year term. The council assists the pope in all matters concerning the contribution of the lay faithful to the life and mission of the Church.
…
Anderson was originally appointed to the council in 2002 by Pope John Paul II.

Pontifical council what’s that?
I am not trying to be obtuse nor insulting, but: Which part don’t you understand??
Oh by the way I’m a brother from council #594. So then he’s elected to the KofC then? I know the supreme kinigh is on this council.
Each September the Knights of Columbus Supreme Board of Directors elects from among themselves the Supreme Knight and other Supreme Officers to repeatable one-year terms.

Completely unrelated to this, but (I presume) because the holy father respects the Supreme Knight as an individual, his holiness has (re)appointed the Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, to his Pontifical Council for the Laity.

That answers my question then. The knights elect a SK for a year. The pontifical council is something else ok 🙂
