Various news sources note that the “heads” of the Eastern Catholic Churches are “ex-officio” members of the Extraordinary Synod to be held in Rome next month. I know this includes the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops. Does it include the heads of Churches of “lesser” status, such as the Metropolitans of the Ruthenians or Ethiopians?

I’m not sure, but the Vatican website does list all of the Synod participants in today’s Daily Bulletin:

press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2014/09/09/0620/01369.html

It does list the Ethiopians and Ruthenians among all the oriental Catholic Churches, so it seems to me that the answer to your question is “Yes”.
Thanks. It states that there are 13 ex-officio Chiese Orientali, so that would have to be the 6 patriarchs, 4 major archbishops, and 3 metropolitans (Ruthenian, Slovak, Ethiopian). It looks like it is only the heads of those Churches *sui iuris * which are large enough to have a synod or council of hierarchs. If all ritual Churches sui iuris are indeed true Churches in a communion, why wouldn’t the heads of the remaining, smaller churches have the same voice?

I’m glad the Eastern Synods are listed first before the Latin episcopal conferences.

You’ll have to ask someone higher up on the hierarchical food chain than me. :o It is a good question.
