For those of your who have in interest in the Syro Malabar Church I thought I’d share a few of our liturgical hymns. Below I have posted some hymns sung in Syriac and in Malayalam, the hymns were originally in East Syriac and were translated to Malayalam in the early 1900’s. The links to the Malayalam version of the hymns are sung to the melody that was originally used in the Syro Malabar Holy Qurbana, when the Qurbana was first translated to Malayalam. The melody has since been changed and new tunes have been created to accompany the hymns.

Even though today the Holy Qurbana takes on different forms of liturgical melodies, in order to maintain a liturgical heritage and remembrance, the Syro Malabar Church decreed that at least one form of the Qurbana must use the original melody. Today, the Holy Qurbana for the Dead and funeral rite, is always sung to the melody of the original hymns.

Thanks for posting these, it’s interesting to hear these hymns. Me and my wife are actually planning on visiting a Syro-Malabar church this Sunday. Would you mind checking your PMs because I have a few questions I wanted to ask. Thanks!

I’ve sent you a reply, I’m glad that you have an interest in the Church.
“Lahku Mara” (To You, O Lord or Udhanageetham) may be used to obtain a *partial indulgence, *under the usual conditions,by any Catholic, by devoutly reciting, in accordance with particular times and circumstances:

That is correct, Lakhu Mara in Malayalam is translated to the hymn “Sarva Dipanam Karthave” and is sung in the beginning of the Syro Malabar Qurbana when the veil of sanctuary is pulled back. The priest and all the people turn to the altar and bow to the presence of the Lord and the unveiled sanctuary.
