I’ve just skim-read this article. Funny, I remember Tab Hunter from when I was a kid, and learned then that he was gay, so he couldn’t have been totally in the closet! Haven’t thought of him for years.
Two things strike me as positive about him in regards to his private life: first, that he evidently believes in keeping his private life private; second, that he seems to have stayed with the same partner for many years. This doesn’t make his actions right, of course, and it is maybe typical of current gay rationalizing that he still claims to be “a devout Catholic”. (Though true of many high profilers; e.g. Nancy Pelosi.)
I believe that perhaps the central problem in the Church today is that so many Catholics do not honor or even recognize her authority----from this springs the “cafeteria-style” Catholics. And if Tab Hunter sees himself as a devout Catholic, he is a good example of this—he is a “strong Catholic”, despite living a gay lifestyle! Well, hooray for him!
The article is actually about the continued difficulties of out-of-the-closet homosexuals in Hollywood, but as a Catholic I am responding to what catches my eye.
And I never before knew that Tab is a Catholic!
What a time to be living in!
Makes me think of Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings”, who says in response to Frodo’s wish that he didn’t have to carry the overwhelming burden of the Ring, “Neither do any who face such times. But it is not our choice as to what times we live in. It is up to us only to do what we can with the situations given us.” (Paraphrased)

when he says he is a devout Catholic, does he mean he attends Mass and receives the sacraments?

Note that the article describes him as a “devout” Catholic. He is not quoted as saying such. Secular media typically reports any Catholic that goes to Mass or just doesn’t hate the Church, as “devout.”

I can’t find any of these interviews. Could you point me toward one or two. I just don’t hear many people describing themselves as “devout” while I read a lot of people describing someone else as devout due to their perception. Writers make these observations all the time.Oh, is *TakePart * considered a “secular” medium?
The reporter is using the word “devout” because that is how Hunter has described himself in dozens and dozens of interviews in recent years…and in fact, for much of his life–so they would have done their research. He most likely said the same in this interview as well, but it did not make for a good quotation.
They are not “reporting” he is devout…they are reporting that he describes and* thinks* of himself as such.
The writer is not going to decide if the actor is devout or not.

Interesting comments on “devout”. Bruised Reed is right----the article claimed Hunter is a “devout Catholic”; it doesn’t quote H. as saying so. And yes, secular media is fond of calling every Catholic “devout” or “staunch” whether or not they are true to the Church—unless they hate the Church or have left it.
