Would it be theologically correct to say that the tabernacle in our churches is the Ark of the New Covenant? I know we say that of Mary; do we also say it of the tabernacle?

It might be called “AN” Ark of the New Covenant. But “THE” Ark sounds like there is only one Ark. We might just want to avoid confusion (wouldn’t want that in our teachings, eh?) and keep calling it the Tabernacle.

Hard to say.

Actually, the tabernacle serves the same purpose as it does in the Jewish Synagogues. They both house the Word of God. In the case of the Jewish Synagogues, it is the Torah. In the case of the Church, it is Jesus.

I would agree that the tabernacle could be called “an” ark of the New Covenant, but Tradition honors the Holy Virgin with the title “Ark of the New Covenant” as she bore in her womb the “Word of God”: Christ incarnate.

One of the things you have to remember is that the Ark of the Covenant in the OT was described as “perfect” and was instructed by God to make. Mary was perfect in order to recieved the Word of God.

Not saying that a tabernacle can be made perfectly…it could…anyways, I hope you get the point. 🙂

Thanks for you replies. They’ve all been helpful to me. I guess it’s not language the Church uses, calling our tabernacles arks of the New Covenant, and it’s not up to me to invent new language.
